Habitat capacity for cougar recolonization in the Upper Great Lakes region. | LitMetric

Habitat capacity for cougar recolonization in the Upper Great Lakes region.

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: Recent findings indicate that cougars (Puma concolor) are expanding their range into the midwestern United States. Confirmed reports of cougar in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have increased dramatically in frequency during the last five years, leading to speculation that cougars may re-establish in the Upper Great Lakes (UGL) region, USA. Recent work showed favorable cougar habitat in northeastern Minnesota, suggesting that the northern forested regions of Michigan and Wisconsin may have similar potential. Recolonization of cougars in the UGL states would have important ecological, social, and political impacts that will require effective management.

Methodology/principal Findings: Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we extended a cougar habitat model to Michigan and Wisconsin and incorporated primary prey densities to estimate the capacity of the region to support cougars. Results suggest that approximately 39% (>58,000 km2) of the study area could support cougars, and that there is potential for a population of approximately 500 or more animals. An exploratory validation of this habitat model revealed strong association with 58 verified cougar locations occurring in the study area between 2008 and 2013.

Conclusions/significance: Spatially explicit information derived from this study could potentially lead to estimation of a viable population, delineation of possible cougar-human conflict areas, and the targeting of site locations for current monitoring. Understanding predator-prey interactions, interspecific competition, and human-wildlife relationships is becoming increasingly critical as top carnivores continue to recolonize the UGL region.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive approach for treating early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer. Optimal trocar placement during VATS ensures comprehensive access to the thoracic cavity, provides a panoramic endoscopic view, and prevents instrument crowding. While established principles such as the Baseball Diamond Principle (BDP) and Triangle Target Principle (TTP) exist, surgeons mainly rely on experience and patient-specific anatomy for trocar placement, potentially leading to sub-optimal surgical plans that increase operative time and fatigue.

Angstrom-Scale Defect-Free Crystalline Membrane for Sieving Small Organic Molecules.

Adv Mater

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Materials-Oriented Chemical Engineering, College of Chemical Engineering, Nanjing Tech University, 30 Puzhu Road, Nanjing, 211816, P. R. China.

Crystalline membranes, represented by the metal-organic framework (MOF) with well-defined angstrom-sized apertures, have shown great potential for molecular separation. Nevertheless, it remains a challenge to separate small molecules with very similar molecular size differences due to angstrom-scale defects during membrane formation. Herein, a stepwise assembling strategy is reported for constructing MOF membranes with intrinsic angstrom-sized lattice aperture lattice to separate organic azeotropic mixtures separation.

One of the most important figures of the Hellenic surgery of the 19 century, professor of the Othonian University of Athens, Theodoros Aretaios (1829-1893), portrays in his personal archives a series of surgical operations in the field of maxillofacial surgery. During his career, he operated the following surgical diseases, these are adenosarcomas or inosarcomas of the parotid region, osteofibroma of the sinus antrum, osteosarcomas of the upper and lower jaw, and lycostoma (cleft palate). He was able to perform radical enucleations of the tumorous masses.

Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy has become the most popular weight loss surgery currently, but it inevitably leaves multiple small scars in the abdomen. Although the appearance of single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy achieve better cosmetic results, it may lead to postoperative complications such as umbilical hernia and umbilical infection. The author has developed a new surgical approach that can compensate for these deficiencies, which we called needlescopic laparoscope sleeve gastrectomy (NLSG).

Objective: The clivus is trapezoidal in shape with uneven bone structure, the optimal number and position of screws for clival fixation are not clear. Therefore, this study aims to explore the optimization clival screw fixation method for occipitocervical instability using finite element analysis.

Methods: Seven finite element models were developed to evaluate biomechanical properties of clival screw fixation for treating occipitocervical stability, including (i) one clival screw fixation A1 and A2 models; (ii) two clival screws fixation B1 and B2 models; (iii) three clival screws fixation C1 and C2 models; (iv) four clival screws fixation D1 model.
