Purpose: To describe the detection of an embolism in the retrobulbar circulation using orbital color Doppler imaging (OCDI) in a patient with an inaccessible fundus because of neovascular glaucoma.

Methods: Review of the clinical, laboratory, photographic, and orbital color Doppler imaging records of a patient with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) associated with neovascular glaucoma.

Results: A 42-year-old man had no light perception in the left eye secondary to neovascular glaucoma. The fundus was not visible because of corneal edema. Orbital color Doppler imaging established the diagnosis of embolic CRAO as the cause of neovascular glaucoma.

Conclusion: Orbital color Doppler imaging is an important diagnostic procedure for establishing CRAO as the cause of neovascular glaucoma when the fundus is not accessible. This noninvasive technology enables differentiation of embolic disease from other conditions as the cause of CRAO.

Purpose: To describe a technique using retroauricular scalp graft for eyebrow reconstruction, along with problems encountered and countermeasures in treatment.

Methods: We present a patient with eyebrow loss following resection of a malignant schwannoma. We initially covered the defect from the upper eyelid to the eyebrow area with artificial dermis for hemostasis and to increase the granulation of the graft bed.

The study of structure-activity relationships is a top priority in the development of nontraditional luminescent materials. In this work, nonconjugated polyurethanes (PUs) with full-color emission (red, green, and blue) are easily obtained by control of the diol monomer structure and the polymerization conditions. Selected diol monomers introduced single, double, or triple bond repeating units into the main chain of the PUs, in order to understand how unsaturated bonds and H-bonds affect their luminescence from a molecular orbital viewpoint.

Image-guided photodynamic therapy is acknowledged as one of the most demonstrative therapeutic modalities for cancer treatment because of its high precision, non-invasiveness, and improved imaging ability. A series of purely organic photosensitizers denoted as BTMCz, BTMPTZ, and BTMPXZ, have been designed and synthesized and are found to exhibit both thermally activated delayed fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission simultaneously. Experimental and theoretical studies are combined to reveal that modulation of the donor of the photosensitizer enables distinct thermally activated delayed fluorescence via a second-order spin-orbit perturbation mechanism involving lowest singlet charge-transfer and higher-lying triplet locally excited states, respectively.

Quantum Chemical Determination of Molecular Dye Candidates for Non-Invasive Bioimaging.

Molecules

December 2024

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677, USA.

Molecular dyes containing carbazole-based π bridges and/or julolidine-based donors should be promising molecules for intense SWIR emission with potential application to molecular bioimaging. This study stochastically analyzes the combinations of more than 250 organic dyes constructed within the D-π-D (or equivalently D-B-D) motif. These dyes are built from 22 donors (D) and 14 π bridges (B) and are computationally examined using density functional theory (DFT).

Aurophilic interaction-based aggregation of gem-digold(I) aryls towards high spin-orbit coupling and strong phosphorescence.

Luminescent gold(I) compounds have attracted intensive attention due to anticipated strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) resulting from heavy atom effect of gold atoms. However, some mononuclear gold(I) compounds are barely satisfactory. Here, we unveil that low participation of gold in transition-related orbitals, caused by 6s-π symmetry mismatch, is the cause of low SOCs in monogold(I) compounds.
