An important aspect in the research and development of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) is the discovery of highly efficient phosphors free of rare-earth (RE) elements. Herein we report the design and synthesis of a new type of RE-free, blue-excitable yellow phosphor, obtained by combining a strongly emissive molecular fluorophore with a bandgap modulating co-ligand, in a three-dimensional metal organic framework. [Zn6(btc)4(tppe)2(DMA)2] (btc = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate, tppe = 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)ethene, DMA = dimethylacetamide) crystallizes in a new structure type and emits bright yellow light when excited by a blue light source. It possesses the highest internal quantum yield among all RE-free, blue-excitable yellow phosphors reported to date, with a value as high as 90.7% (λex = 400 nm). In addition to its high internal quantum yield, the new yellow phosphor also demonstrates high external quantum yield, luminescent and moisture stability, solution processability, and color tunability, making it a promising material for use in phosphor conversion WLEDs.

Information storage and encryption are the key technologies for modern information transmission. However, most optical information storage technologies based on long persistent luminescent (PersL) only have one fixed response mode, which is easy to imitate, limiting their security in advanced information storage and encryption applications. Besides, the cost of rare earth-doped PersL materials restricts their wide application.

Constructing multifunctional phosphors grounded in the intricate relationship between energy level structures and luminescent properties has captivated researchers in the luminescent material field. Herein, using the embedded cluster multiconfigurational ab initio method, the energy levels of Bi in the SrLaGaO host at different geometries were calculated, which results in the establishment of complete configurational coordinate curves, yielding breathing mode vibrational frequencies and equilibrium bond lengths for all excited states. These curves supply deep insight into the luminescence properties of Bi-doped phosphors and highlight the impact of ions in the second coordination sphere on luminescence.

Many phosphor hosts, for example, nitrides and sulfides, often face challenges such as hydrolysis and oxidation, limiting their application in phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). In this study, we developed a highly humidity-resistant yellow-green-emitting phosphor BaSiNO:Ce (BSNO:Ce). The DFT calculations revealed a high Debye temperature (Θ = 1159 K), indicating a rigid crystal structure that contributes to the photoluminescence thermal quenching resistance of BSNO.

Lead halide perovskites have garnered interest in light-emitting diode (LED) applications due to their strong emission and tunable properties. However, conventional synthesis methods involve energy-intensive thermal processes and hazardous organic solvents, raising environmental concerns. In this study, we report a simple and eco-friendly mechanochemical approach that produces phase-pure blue-emitting CsCuI (emission at 440 nm) and yellow-emitting CsCuI (emission at 570 nm) phosphors through polarity modulation and control of grinding duration.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have attracted extensive research attention due to their potential applications in information encryption, anticounterfeiting technology, and security logic. The strategic combinations of organic phosphor linkers and metal ions lead to tremendous frameworks, which could unveil many undiscovered properties of organics. Here, the synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional MOF (Cd-MOF) is reported, which demonstrates enhanced blue photoluminescence and a phosphorescent lifetime of 124 ms as compared to the pristine linker (HL) under ambient conditions due to the scaffolding and heavy-atom effects of metal chains in the framework.
