A symmetrical bridging ligand, 5,11-bis(4-([2,2':6',2″-terpyridine]-4'-yl)phenyl)-4,12-dihydropyreno[4,5-d:9,10-d']diimidazole (tpy-H2PhImzPy-tpy), containing terpyridyl coordinating units connected via a pyrenyl-bis-phenylimidazole spacer have been designed to synthesize a new class of light harvesting bimetallic Ru(II) complexes. The electronic properties of this complexes can be fine-tuned by varying tridentate terminal ligands. Full characterization of the compounds has been done with the help of (1)H NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Geometry optimization of the complexes was also carried out with density functional theory (DFT). Electronic absorption spectra exhibit a number of very intense π-π* and n-π* transitions in the UV and moderately intense MLCT and ILCT transitions in the visible region. Interestingly, the present bimetallic complexes exhibit moderately strong luminescence in the range between 657 and 703 nm and lifetimes (long component) between 5.8 and 67.0 ns at room temperature showing the dependence of the emission characteristics upon the type of terminal ligand and solvent. Detailed temperature-dependent emission measurements showed that an overall enhancement of photoluminescence intensity and lifetime occur in all three cases upon lowering of temperature. The redox behavior of the compounds is characterized by a single reversible anodic wave corresponding to two closely spaced one-electron processes. The appearance of intervalence charge transfer transition (IVCT) bands in the NIR region on electrochemical generation of Ru(II)Ru(II)/Ru(II)Ru(III) species indicates the presence of substantial electronic communication among the two ruthenium centers in the bimetallic complexes. DFT and TDDFT calculations were also done for better understanding of the absorption and emission spectral characteristics of the complexes.

In the present study, we have synthesized and thoroughly characterized two Ru(II) dimers with compositions [(ttpy)Ru(tpvpt')Ru(ttpy)](ClO) and [(ttpy)Ru(t'pvpvpt')Ru(ttpy)](ClO) incorporating phenylene-vinylene-substituted terpyridine bridging ligands capable of coordinating in both an NNN- and cyclometalated NNC-fashion. The complexes display strong absorption across the entire UV-vis spectral domain and exhibit luminescence in the NIR region (820-850 nm). The N atoms in the outer coordination sphere were employed for alteration of the photoredox behaviors of the complexes via acid-base equilibria.

Herein we report chemoselective transfer hydrogenation (TH) of aldehydes in aqueous medium using a series of homobimetallic Ru(II) catalysts. Two homobimetallic complexes (Ru1 and Ru3) and one monometallic complex (Ru2) have been employed in the catalytic reduction of aldehydes. Bimetallic complex [(p-cymene)(RuCl)L] (Ru3) is obtained from the reaction of Schiff base ligand 2,2'-((1E,1'E)-((3,3',5,5'-tetraisopropyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'diyl)bis(azaneylylidene))bis(methaneylylidene))bis(4-bromophenol) (HL) and characterized by various spectroscopic and analytical techniques.

A new bidentate bridging ligand, bis(2-pyridyl)thieno[3,4-]pyrazine is reported, along with its mono- and bi-metallic Ru(II) complexes as representative examples. Spectroscopic, electrochemical and X-ray crystallographic characterization of these species is reported, with the separation of the two Ru(III)/Ru(II) couples of the bimetallic complex suggesting better metal-metal communication than classical polypyridyl analogues.

Multipurpose applications of a newly developed homobimetallic Ru(II) complex, Ru-NDI[PF], which incorporates 1,10-phenanthroline and triazole-pyridine ligands and linked via a (-CH-) spacer to the reputed anion-π interacting NDI system, are described. Solution-state studies of the bimetallic complex, including EPR, PL, UV-vis, and NMR experiments, reveal two sequential one-electron transfers to the NDI unit, generating NDI⋅ and NDI in the presence of F selectively. This process inhibits the primary electron transfer from Ru(II) to the NDI unit, thereby allowing the MLCT-based emission of the complex to be recovered, resulting in a corresponding ten-fold increase in luminescence intensity.

Stimuli-responsive multistep switching phenomena of a luminescent bimetallic Ru(II) complex are employed herein to fabricate multiple configurable logic devices. The complex exhibits "off-on" and "on-off" emission switching upon alternative treatment with visible and UV light. Additionally, remarkable augmentation of the rate as well as quantum yield of photoisomerization was achieved via the use of a chemical oxidant (Ce) as well as a reductant (metallic sodium).
