Purpose of the work was to study the cardiovascular effects of simulated factors in a 520-day crewed mission to Mars, and to validate the diagnostic value of the ultrasonic investigation of microcirculation and endothelium-dependent dilation of the right brachial artery in 6 male volunteers at the age of 28 to 39 years. It appears that 520-d isolation affected intracardiac hemodynamics and endothelium function more dramatically compared with 105-d isolation, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis. These findings add insight into the "cost of human adaptation" to very long isolation.

Article Synopsis
  • The Mars500 mission involved six crewmembers living in isolation for 520 days to study the human microbiota's composition and its relationship with the host.
  • Researchers analyzed 88 salivary microbiota samples over 720 days, focusing on how time, diet, and individual differences influenced microbiota diversity.
  • Results indicated that individual variability had the most significant impact on the salivary microbiota, showcasing its personalized nature even in a controlled, shared environment.

A Longitudinal Epigenetic Aging and Leukocyte Analysis of Simulated Space Travel: The Mars-500 Mission.

Astronauts undertaking long-duration space missions may be vulnerable to unique stressors that can impact human aging. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the relationship of mission duration with DNA-methylation-based biomarkers of aging in astronauts. Using data from the six participants of the Mars-500 mission, a high-fidelity 520-day ground simulation experiment, we tested relationships of mission duration with five longitudinally measured blood DNA-methylation-based metrics: DNAmGrimAge, DNAmPhenoAge, DNA-methylation-based estimator of telomere length (DNAmTL), mitotic divisions (epigenetic mitotic clock [epiTOC2]), and pace of aging (PoA).

Introduction: Neuroblastoma is one of the most common extracranial solid tumors in children, which accounts for about 7-10% in children's tumors. The prognosis group of patients with neuroblastoma could not only improve the efficacy of high-risk patients, but also reduce the effects of drug complications for surviving patients.

Material And Methods: Patients diagnosed with neuroblastoma between 1986 and 2012 were selected form the TARGET database.

Body composition and metabolic changes during a 520-day mission simulation to Mars.

November 2018

Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences, Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan, Italy.

Purpose: The "Mars-500 project" allowed to evaluate the changes in psychological/physiological adaptation over a prolonged confinement, in order to gather information for future missions. Here, we evaluated the impact of confinement and isolation on body composition, glucose metabolism/insulin resistance and adipokine levels.

Methods: The "Mars-500 project" consisted of 520 consecutive days of confinement from June 3, 2010 to Nov 4, 2011.

Until recently, the main selection focus in UK dairy goats has been on milk yield. To develop a selection index suitably weighted for a variety of traits, it is important to understand the genetic relationships between production, health and fertility traits. This study focussed on three aspects of reproduction that are of interest to goat breeders.
