The generation of chemical fuels via direct solar-to-fuel conversion from a fully integrated artificial photosynthetic system is an attractive approach for clean and sustainable energy, but so far there has yet to be a system that would have the acceptable efficiency, durability and can be manufactured at a reasonable cost. Here, we show that a semiconductor mesh made from all inorganic nanowires can achieve unassisted solar-driven, overall water-splitting without using any electron mediators. Free-standing nanowire mesh networks could be made in large scales using solution synthesis and vacuum filtration, making this approach attractive for low cost implementation.

An integrated photovoltaic antenna based on a lateral nanowire array solar cell and metal mesh is proposed and studied by three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation. The results show that the integration of the metal meshed antenna significantly enhances the absorption of the nanowire array due to the diffraction effects of the two-dimensional grating and the excitation of localized surface plasmons. By optimizing the nanowire diameter, antenna linewidth, and gap between them, the integrated solar cell achieves a maximum conversion efficiency of 11.

Photodetectors and gas sensors are vital in modern technology, spanning from environmental monitoring to biomedical diagnostics. This paper explores the UV detection and gas sensing properties of a zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod array (ZNA) grown on silver nanowire mesh (AgNM) using a hydrothermal method. We examined the impact of different zinc acetate precursor concentrations on their properties.

Due to the pervasive use of oil for energy and other industrial applications, solutions to oil-water separation have received a great deal of attention lately to address the environmental damage of oil spills and groundwater contamination. However, many of these separation methods are materially expensive and environmentally hazardous, require elaborate fabrication, or rely on large amounts of energy to function. Herein, we provide an effective low-cost method for oil-water separation based on the hydrophobicity induced by self-assembled bioinspired diphenylalanine peptide nanowires grown on polyester fabric.

Electrode scaling poses a critical barrier to the adoption of electrochemical processes in wastewater treatment, primarily due to electrode inactivation and increased internal reactor resistance. We introduce an antiscaling strategy using tip-enhanced electric fields to redirect scale-forming compounds (e.g.
