Five British ale yeast strains were subjected to flavour profiling under brewery fermentation conditions in which all other brewing parameters were kept constant. Significant variation was observed in the timing and quantity of flavour-related chemicals produced. Genetic tests showed no evidence of hybrid origins in any of the strains, including one strain previously reported as a possible hybrid of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. bayanus. Variation maintained in historical S. cerevisiae ale yeast collections is highlighted as a potential source of novelty in innovative strain improvement for bioflavour production.

In this work, we present a mechanobiochemical model for two-dimensional cell migration which couples mechanical properties of the cell cytosol with biochemical processes taking place near or on the cell plasma membrane. The modelling approach is based on a recently developed mathematical formalism of evolving bulk-surface partial differential equations of reaction-diffusion type. We solve these equations using finite element methods within a moving-mesh framework derived from the weak formulation of the evolving bulk-surface PDEs.

Background: Empagliflozin has been proposed as a treatment for COVID-19 on the basis of its anti-inflammatory, metabolic, and haemodynamic effects. The RECOVERY trial aimed to assess its safety and efficacy in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19.
Methods: In the randomised, controlled, open-label RECOVERY trial, several possible treatments are compared with usual care in patients hospitalised with COVID-19.
