Reaction of CuSO4·5H2O with 1,3-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene (m-bbitrb) provides a new positively charged M2L4 type molecule, [SO4⊂Cu2(m-bbitrb)4]SO4. This compound includes SO4(2-) inside and outside the cationic cage. Despite this compound being insoluble in water, it shows highly efficient perchlorate removal activity from water by the exchange with SO4(2-) outside the cage.

The demand for improving the activity, durability, and recyclability of metal-organic cages (MOCs) that work as photocatalytic molecular devices in a homogeneous system has promoted research to combine them with other solid materials. An ML type photosensitive metal-organic cage MOC-Q2 with light-harvesting ligands and catalytic Pd centers has been synthesized and further heterogenized with graphitic carbon nitride to prepare a robust direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen generation. The optimized g-CN/MOC-Q2 (0.

Block Co-PolyMOCs by Stepwise Self-Assembly.

Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, United States.

We report a stepwise assembly strategy for the integration of metal-organic cages (MOCs) into block copolymers (BCPs). This approach creates "block co-polyMOC" (BCPMOC) materials whose microscopic structures and mechanical properties are readily tunable by adjusting the size and geometry of the MOCs and the composition of the BCPs. In the first assembly step, BCPs functionalized with a pyridyl ligand on the chain end form star-shaped polymers triggered by metal-coordination-induced MOC assembly.

Self-assembled construction of a sheet-type coordination polymer bearing cationic M2L4 cages: creation of channel-like space for removal of ClO4(-) and NO3(-) from aqueous solutions.

Treatment of CuCl2 with a bis-benzimidazole-type ligand, p-bbiteb, afforded a new 2D coordination polymer bearing cationic Cu2L4 cages on the sheet framework. The regular arrangement of the cages created channel-like space for anions. The compound removed ClO4(-) and NO3(-) from aqueous solutions by exchange with Cl(-) in the channels.

Synthesis and structure of [An(RO)PS2]- complexes.

August 2004

School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Fife KY16 9ST, UK.

Reaction of An(S)PS(2)P(S)An with NaOR [R = Me, Et, (i)Pr] gives the non-symmetric phosphonodithioato anions [An(RO)PS(2)](-) which can be complexed to a range of metals. The group 10 metals (Ni, Pd and Pt) adopt square planar ML(2) complexes. The zinc and cadmium complexes adopt isostructural dimeric M(2)L(4) structures whilst mercury complexes adopt a subtly different dimeric motif.
