Single-switch scanning is a technique used by some individuals for spoken and/or written communication. We developed a method for adjusting the settings in a single-switch scanning interface to increase a user's text entry rate (TER). We evaluated that method with nine individuals who use single-switch scanning to communicate. Text entry rates improved by an average of 120% (p = 0.003). All nine subjects increased their TER by at least 40%, and five of the nine increased their TER by over 100%. At baseline, TER averaged 1.42 words per minute (wpm), ranging from 0.28 to 2.92 wpm. With the revised settings, TER averaged 2.72 wpm and ranged from 1.12 to 6.51 wpm.

Communication for people with motor impairments is a difficult, yet necessary, task in daily activities. To do so, soft keyboards, digital counterpart of physical keyboards, are used. Depending on their features, several designs can be considered, however their thoughtful evaluation in real-life is not feasible.

Background: Locked-In Syndrome (LIS) is a rare neurological condition in which patients' ability to move, interact, and communicate is impaired despite their being conscious and awake. After assessing the patient's needs, we developed a customized device for an LIS patient, as the commercial augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices could not be used.
Methods: A 51-year-old woman with incomplete LIS for 15 years came to our laboratory seeking a communication tool.

Purpose: Despite the importance of having knowledge about a child's cognitive functioning, less than one-third of children with cerebral palsy (CP) are formally assessed. Consequently, the cognitive strengths of many children with severe CP may be underestimated or go overlooked. This case study aimed to test accommodations to cognitive assessment administration procedures to enable switch access.

Many individuals with complex communication needs and severe motor impairments are unable to control technologies through conventional means and require alternative access techniques to achieve accurate and efficient access. With current alternative access techniques, individuals with severe motor impairments are limited in that they can only use one access technique at a time. The purpose of this project was to test proof of concept of a new multimodal access technique which integrated eye gaze and single switch scanning selection techniques.

Ticker is a probabilistic stereophonic single-switch text entry method for visually-impaired users with motor disabilities who rely on single-switch scanning systems to communicate. Such scanning systems are sensitive to a variety of noise sources, which are inevitably introduced in practical use of single-switch systems. Ticker uses a novel interaction model based on stereophonic sound coupled with statistical models for robust inference of the user's intended text in the presence of noise.
