Objective: The authors conducted a retrospective study to compare the implantation of carbon fiber composite frame cages (CFCFCs) to the implantation of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages after anterior cervical discectomy for cervical degenerative disc disease. In addition, the predictive factors that influenced fusion or subsidence were investigated.

Methods: A total of 58 patients with single-level degenerative disc disease were treated with anterior cervical discectomy and implantation of stand-alone cages; CFCFCs were used in 35 patients, and PEEK cages were used in 23 patients. Preoperative and postoperative radiological and clinical assessments were performed.

Results: During the mean follow-up period of 41 months, fusion occurred in 43 patients (74.1%), and subsidence developed in 18 patients (31.0%). Pain decreased in all patients, and the patients' satisfaction rate was 75.9%. Neither fusion nor subsidence was related to the clinical outcome. There were no significant differences in the clinical and radiological outcomes between the CFCFC and the PEEK cage groups. Smoking history (p=0.023) was significantly associated with pseudarthrosis, and cage height (≥7mm) (p=0.037) were significantly associated with subsidence.

Conclusion: The clinical and radiological results were similar between the CFCFC and the PEEK cage groups. Fusion or subsidence did not affect the clinical outcomes. Smoking history and cage height (≥7mm) were predictive factors for pseudarthrosis or subsidence in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with stand-alone cages.

Background: The effect of axial rotation between the femoral neck and ankle joint (total rotation [TR]) on normal knees is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the TR effect on normal knee kinematics.

Methods: Volunteers were divided into groups large (L), intermediate (I), and small (S), using hierarchical cluster analysis based on TR in the standing position.

Transoral resection of a symptomatic odontoid process aneurysmal bone cyst: illustrative case.

J Neurosurg Case Lessons

January 2025

Departments of Neurosurgery, NYU Langone Health, New York, New York.

Background: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are slow-growing, expansile bone tumors most often observed in the long bones and lumbar and thoracic spine. Anterior column ABCs of the spine are rare, and few cases have described their surgical management, particularly for lesions with extension into the odontoid process and the bilateral C2 pedicles. In the present case, the authors describe a two-stage strategy for resection of a symptomatic 2.

Direct anterior and direct lateral approach in patients with femoral neck fractures receiving a total hip arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial.

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Health Møre and Romsdal HF, Kristiansund Hospital, Kristiansund; Department of Neuromedicine and Movement Science, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway.

Background And Purpose:  The optimal approach to the hip joint in patients with displaced femoral neck fractures (dFNF) receiving a total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. We compared the direct lateral approach (DLA) with the direct anterior approach (DAA) primarily on Timed Up and Go (TUG), and secondarily on the Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), the Oxford Hip Score (OHS), EQ5D-5L, and the EQ5D-VAS.

Methods:  Between 2018 and 2023, we conducted a randomized controlled trial including elderly patients with dFNFs treated with THA.

Left superior cervical ganglia lymph node mimicry and its role in rat ventricular arrhythmias following myocardial infarction.

Acta Physiol (Oxf)

February 2025

Department of Cardiology, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Shandong University, Jinan, China.

Aim: Sympathetic overactivation may lead to severe ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) post-myocardial infarction (MI). The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) is an extracardiac sympathetic ganglion which regulates cardiac autonomic tone. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and functional significance of SCG on neuro-cardiac communication post-MI.
