Published: October 2014

The synthesis, morphological characterization, and optical properties of colloidal, Eu(III) doped GdO nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes are presented. Utilizing wet chemical techniques and various synthesis routes, we were able to obtain spherical, nanodisk, nanotripod, and nanotriangle-like morphology of GdO:Eu nanoparticles. Various concentrations of Eu ions in the crystal matrix of the nanoparticles were tested in order to establish the levels at which the concentration quenching effect is negligible. Based on the luminescence spectra, luminescence lifetimes and optical parameters, which were calculated using the simplified Judd-Ofelt theory, correlations between the GdO nanoparticles morphology and Eu ions luminescence were established, and allowed to predict the theoretical maximum quantum efficiency to reach from 61 to 98 %. We have also discussed the impact of the crystal structure of GdO nanoparticles, as well as coordinating environment of luminescent ions located at the surface, on the emission spectra. With the use of a tunable femtosecond laser system and the Z-scan measurement technique, the values of the effective two-photon absorption cross-section in the wavelength range from 550 to 1,200 nm were also calculated. The nonlinear optical measurements revealed maximum multi-photon absorption in the wavelength range from 600 to 750 nm.

Electronic address:

The present work was undertaken to know the lanthanide doping effect on the physicochemical properties of Pt/CeO catalysts and their catalytic activity for toluene oxidation. A series of lanthanide ions (La, Pr, Nd, Sm and Gd) were incorporated into ceria lattice by hydrothermal method, and the Pt nanoparticles with equal quality were successfully loaded on various ceria-based supports. Their catalytic performance toward toluene oxidation shows a remarkable lanthanide-doping effect, and the activity is much dependent on the ion radius and valence state of dopants.

Structural evolution in functional materials is a physicochemical phenomenon, which is important from a fundamental study point of view and for its applications in magnetism, catalysis, and nuclear waste immobilization. In this study, we used x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to examine the GdHfO (GHO) pyrochlore, and we showed that it underwent a thermally induced crystalline phase evolution. Superconducting quantum interference device measurements were carried out on both the weakly ordered pyrochlore and the fully ordered phases.

A multifunctional lipid that forms contrast-agent liposomes with dual-control release capabilities for precise MRI-guided drug delivery.

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, 116024, PR China. Electronic address:

Monitoring of nanoparticle-based therapy in vivo and controlled drug release are urgently needed for the precise treatment of disease. We have synthesized a multifunctional Gd-DTPA-ONB (GDO) lipid by introducing the Gd-DTPA contrast agent moiety into an o-nitro-benzyl ester lipid. By design, liposomes formed from the GDO lipid combine MRI tracking ability and dual-trigger release capabilities with maximum sensitivity (because all lipids bear the cleavable moiety) without reducing the drug encapsulation rate.

Recently, multifunctional clearable inorganic theranostic nanoparticles have been attracting more and more attention. Protein-based nanoparticles can be cleared by the hepatobiliary system efficiently. In this work, ultrasmall gadolinium oxide (GdO) nanoparticles, which possess the advantage of high longitudinal relaxation rate, were coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA).
