The anti-Stokes emission of photon upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) facilitates their use as labels for ultrasensitive detection in biological samples as infrared excitation does not induce autofluorescence at visible wavelengths. The detection of extremely low-abundance analytes, however, remains challenging as it is impossible to completely avoid nonspecific binding of label conjugates. To overcome this limitation, we developed a novel hybridization complex transfer technique using UCNP labels to detect short nucleic acids directly without target amplification.

Climate change is an emerging global health crisis, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where health outcomes are increasingly compromised by environmental stressors such as pollution, natural disasters, and human migration. With a focus on promoting health equity, Global Surgery advocates for expanding access to surgical care and enhancing health outcomes, particularly in resource-limited and disaster-affected areas like LMICs. The healthcare industry-and more specifically, surgical care-significantly contributes to the global carbon footprint, primarily through resource-intensive settings, i.

Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) metamaterials show promise for thermal management systems but are challenging to integrate into existing packaging with strict mechanical requirements. Composite TPMS lattices may offer more control over thermal and mechanical properties through material and geometric tuning. Here, we fabricate copper-plated, 3D-printed triply periodic minimal surface primitive lattices and evaluate their suitability for battery thermal management systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic affected patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) at Farabi Eye Hospital in Iran, comparing patients from before and during the pandemic.
  • A total of 375 patients were analyzed, revealing that those referred during the pandemic had quicker referral and surgical wait times, but no significant changes in clinical characteristics or surgical outcomes.
  • The use of general anesthesia increased during the pandemic period, prompting the need for further research into this trend.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) for adolescents has been made more accessible due to recent policy changes, but challenges remain, particularly for diverse populations.
  • A study from 2017-2022 revealed that about 15%-20% of MBS cases in the U.S. involved adolescents, predominantly females and white patients with an average age of 16.1 years.
  • Despite a decline in cases during COVID-19, the volume rebounded, with an increase in sleeve gastrectomy and robotic-assisted surgeries, while overall complication rates remained low at 2.9%.
