In this article we propose to use electronically tunable metasurfaces as spatial microwave modulators. We demonstrate that like spatial light modulators, which have been recently proved to be ideal tools for controlling light propagation through multiple scattering media, spatial microwave modulators can efficiently shape in a passive way complex existing microwave fields in reverberating environments with a non-coherent energy feedback. Unlike in free space, we establish that a binary-only phase state tunable metasurface allows a very good control over the waves, owing to the random nature of the electromagnetic fields in these complex media. We prove in an everyday reverberating medium, that is, a typical office room, that a small spatial microwave modulator placed on the walls can passively increase the wireless transmission between two antennas by an order of magnitude, or on the contrary completely cancel it. Interestingly and contrary to free space, we show that this results in an isotropic shaped microwave field around the receiving antenna, which we attribute again to the reverberant nature of the propagation medium. We expect that spatial microwave modulators will be interesting tools for fundamental physics and will have applications in the field of wireless communications.

A New Global Mangrove Height Map with a 12 meter spatial resolution.

Sci Data

January 2025

ETH Zürich, Institut für Umweltingenieurwissenschaften, Zürich, Switzerland.

Mangrove forests thrive along global tropical coasts, acting as a barrier that protects coastlines against storm surges and as nurseries for an entire food web. They are also known for their high carbon sequestration rates and soil carbon stocks. We introduce a new global mangrove canopy height map generated from TanDEM-X spaceborne elevation measurements collected during the 2011-2013 period with a 12-meter spatial resolution and an accuracy of 2.

The pressing necessity to mitigate climate change and decrease greenhouse gas emissions has driven the advancement of heterostructure-based photocatalysts for effective CO₂ reduction. This study introduces a novel heterojunction photocatalyst formed by integrating potassium-doped polymeric carbon nitride (KPCN) with metallic Zn₃N₂, synthesized via a microwave-assisted molten salt method. The resulting Schottky contact effectively suppresses the reverse diffusion of electrons, achieving spatial separation of photogenerated charges and prolonging their lifetime, which significantly enhances photocatalytic activity and efficiency.

Interaction-Enhanced Superradiance of a Rydberg-Atom Array.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

CAS Key Laboratory of Quantum Information, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China.

We study the superradiant phase transition of an array of Rydberg atoms in a dissipative microwave cavity. Under the interplay of the cavity field and the long-range Rydberg interaction, the steady state of the system exhibits an interaction-enhanced superradiance, with vanishing critical atom-cavity coupling rates at a discrete set of interaction strengths. We find that, while the phenomenon can be analytically understood in the case of a constant all-to-all interaction, the enhanced superradiance persists under typical experimental parameters with spatially dependent interactions, but at modified critical interaction strengths.

Hyperspectral Metachip-Based 3D Spatial Map for Cancer Cell Screening and Quantification.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Advanced Microscopy and Instrumentation Research Center, School of Instrumentation Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, 150080, China.

In this paper, compact terahertz (THz) metachips for hyperspectral screening and quantitative evaluation of human cancer cells is reported. This pixelated resonant metachips feature the resonance channel from 1 and 3 THz frequency with a record-high quality factor (up to 230). Through the interactions of various cancer cells of different concentrations, high-dimensional spectral signatures are obtained, which are further transformed into a spatial map for labelling and quantification purposes.

A comparison of traffic crash and connected vehicle event data on a freeway corridor with Hard-Shoulder Running.

Police crash reports have traditionally been the primary data source for research and development projects aimed at improving traffic safety. However, there are important limitations of such data, particularly the relative infrequency of crashes on a site-by-site basis in many contexts. Crash analyses often require multiple years of data and the use of such data for short-term evaluations creates challenges.
