We propose an ellipsoidal neutron focusing mirror using a metal substrate made with electroless nickel-phosphorus (NiP) plated material for the first time. Electroless NiP has great advantages for realizing an ellipsoidal neutron mirror because of its amorphous structure, good machinability and relatively large critical angle of total reflection for neutrons. We manufactured the mirror by combining ultrahigh precision cutting and fine polishing to generate high form accuracy and low surface roughness. The form accuracy of the mirror was estimated to be 5.3 μm P-V and 0.8 μm P-V for the minor-axis and major-axis direction respectively, while the surface roughness was reduced to 0.2 nm rms. The effect of form error on focusing spot size was evaluated by using a laser beam and the focusing performance of the mirror was verified by neutron experiments.

In research on mesoscale structure and correlations, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is increasingly being employed to map fully three-dimensional distributions of scattered intensity at low momentum transfer. While traditionally SANS experiments and data analysis methods are designed to prioritize the determination of salient information in only one or two dimensions, the trend towards volumetric intensity mapping experiments calls for new software tools to assist with analyzing the resulting datasets. In this paper, we describe the development of a new software module, the ().

Hypothesis: The formation of a biomolecular corona on nanoparticle surfaces significantly influences their biological behaviour, particularly in drug delivery applications. Despite the prevalence of ingestion of particles (e.g, during oral drug delivery), our understanding of corona formation within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract remains limited, especially for non-protein components.

The optoelectronic properties of two layered copper oxyselenide compounds, with nominal composition SrZnOCuSe and BaZnOCuSe, have been investigated to determine their suitability as p-type conductors. The structure, band gaps and electrical conductivity of pristine and alkali-metal-doped samples have been determined. We find that the strontium-containing compound, SrZnOCuSe, adopts the expected tetragonal structure with 4/ symmetry, and has a band gap of 2.

The characterization of the structure of ferritin in solution and the arrangement of iron stored in its cavity are intriguing subjects for both cell biology and applied science, since the protein structure, stability, and easiness of production make it an ideal tool for biomedical applications. We characterized the ferritin structure over a wide range of iron loadings by visible light, X-ray, and neutron scattering techniques. We found that the arrangement of iron ions inside the protein cage resulted in a more disposable arrangement at lower loading factors and then in a crystalline structure.

Ether-linked surfactants are widely used in formulations such as liquid soaps, but despite their ubiquity, it is unclear how -ethylene glycol linkers in surfactants, such as sodium lauryl -(ethylene glycol) sulfate (SLEnS), influence micellar packing in the presence of NaCl. In the present work, we probe the structure and hydration of ether linkers in micelles comprising monodisperse SLEnS surfactants using contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering (CV-SANS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Using SAXS, changes in micellar structure were observed for SLEnS ( = 1, 2, or 3) arising from the extent of ethoxylation.
