Importance: Increasing the understanding of vaccine effectiveness (VE) against levels of severe influenza in children could help increase uptake of influenza vaccination and strengthen vaccine policies globally.

Objective: To investigate VE in children by severity of influenza illness.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This case-control study with a test-negative design used data from 8 participating medical centers located in geographically different US states in the New Vaccine Surveillance Network from November 6, 2015, through April 8, 2020.

Introduction: Influenza burden (IB) estimates are crucial for monitoring disease trends, allocating limited resources, and promoting influenza vaccination. However, IB in Egypt is poorly understood. This study estimates the mean-seasonal IB in Egypt, across levels of severity by age and regions using sentinel surveillance data between 2016 and 2019.

Predictive Value of IL-6 and Lymphocyte Subsets for Death in Children With Influenza-Associated Encephalopathy A Retrospective Study.

Mediators Inflamm

December 2024

Emergency Department, Henan Province Engineering Research Center of Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Infection and Critical Care, Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China.

This study aims to investigate the predictive value of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and lymphocyte subsets for death in children with influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE). This study included 76 children with IAE who were divided into a death group and a survival group. The differences in the levels of IL-6 and lymphocyte subsets between the two groups were analyzed, and the predictive value of these two parameters was compared by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.

Health outcomes after national acute sleep deprivation events among the American public.

medRxiv

October 2024

Center for Pulmonary Vascular Biology and Medicine, Pittsburgh Heart, Lung, and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep deprivation is linked to significant health risks, including an increased likelihood of influenza, particularly following acute sleep deprivation events (ASDEs) identified in a large population study.
  • The study used data from Fitbit users to analyze sleep patterns and health outcomes, revealing a correlation between political/non-political events and instances of decreased sleep.
  • Genetic factors related to sleep duration were found to influence both the severity of sleep deprivation and the risk of subsequent health issues, emphasizing the need for awareness of health impacts during major national events.

Problem/condition: Seasonal influenza accounts for 9.3 million-41 million illnesses, 100,000-710,000 hospitalizations, and 4,900-51,000 deaths annually in the United States. Since 2003, the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET) has been conducting population-based surveillance for laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations in the United States, including weekly rate estimations and descriptions of clinical characteristics and outcomes for hospitalized patients.
