The diagnostic process and discrimination of mucosal lesions present a formidable challenge for numerous clinicians, primarily attributable to the common overlap of clinical manifestations observed across various categories, including infectious, autoimmune, connective tissue, and systemic vascular inflammatory diseases. In cases of mucosal lesions, syphilis presents distinctive characteristics that can help clinicians differentiate it from other conditions. The most common manifestation of primary syphilis is mostly a painless, firm, indurated ulcer known as a chancre, which typically appears at the site of inoculation, with enlargement of regional lymph nodes.

Blood donation screening is an opportunity to monitor the burden of asymptomatic infections, providing information on contemporary factors associated with infection and public health insights into transmission.
Methods: Blood donations collected at five Brazilian blood centers between January 2020 and February 2022 were screened with treponemal or non-treponemal assays according to local protocols, followed by alternate Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA); samples with reactive or indeterminate results in the alternate ELISA were further tested with the rapid plasma reagin (RPR), and categorized as RPR-positive or RPR-negative.

Syphilis, caused by the highly invasive pathogen , remains one of the oldest and most significant public health challenges. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of new syphilis cases among adults aged 15-49 years in 2022 was estimated at approximately 8 million, with notable increases observed in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. The cellular immune response plays a critical role in combating this infection, and its insufficient activity may contribute to chronic progression of the disease.

Introduction: In 2010, China launched the 10-year National Syphilis Prevention and Control Program to curb the spread of syphilis by integrating syphilis screening and treatment with HIV services. Herein, we aimed to evaluate changes in the prevalence of syphilis among people living with HIV (PLHIV) in China.
Methods: We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis by searching the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China Biomedical Literature, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and CQVIP databases from inception to 1 June 2024 to obtain relevant articles.
