AI Article Synopsis

  • The Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA) is a web-based exam that helps medical students evaluate their readiness for the Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) exam by covering similar content and format.
  • The study analyzed the performance of 9,789 US and international medical graduates who took CCSSA before their first Step 2 CK attempt, using statistical methods to understand the relationship between scores on both assessments.
  • The results indicated that CCSSA scores significantly predicted performance on Step 2 CK, showing that students with lower CCSSA scores are more likely to struggle or fail the Step 2 CK exam, thereby highlighting CCSSA's usefulness as a preparatory tool.

Article Abstract

Background: The Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA) is a web-administered multiple-choice examination that includes content that is typically covered during the core clinical clerkships in medical school. Because the content of CCSSA items resembles the content of the items on Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), CCSSA is intended to be a tool for students to help assess whether they are prepared for Step 2 CK and to become familiar with its content, format, and pacing.

Purposes: This study examined the relationship between performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners® CCSSA and performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination® Step 2 CK for U.S./Canadian (USMGs) and international medical school students/graduates (IMGs).

Methods: The study included 9,789 participants who took CCSSA prior to their first Step 2 CK attempt. Linear and logistic regression analyses investigated the relationship between CCSSA performance and performance on Step 2 CK for both USMGs and IMGs.

Results: CCSSA scores explained 58% of the variation in first Step 2 CK scores for USMGs and 60% of the variation for IMGs; the relationship was somewhat different for the two groups as indicated by statistically different intercepts and slopes for the regression lines based on each group. Logistic regression results showed that examinees in both groups with low scores on CCSSA were at a higher risk of failing their first Step 2 CK attempt.

Conclusions: RESULTS suggest that CCSSA can provide students with a valuable practice tool and a realistic self-assessment of their readiness to take Step 2 CK.

Genome-wide identification of UDP-glycosyltransferases involved in flavonol glycosylation induced by UV-B irradiation in Eriobotrya japonica.

Plant Physiol Biochem

January 2025

College of Agriculture & Biotechnology, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China; Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Horticultural Crop Quality Improvement, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China. Electronic address:

Flavonol glycosides are secondary metabolites important for plant development and stress defense such as UV-B irradiation. UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) catalyzes the last step in the biosynthesis of flavonol glycosides. Eriobotrya japonica is abundant in flavonol glycosides, but UGTs responsible for accumulation of flavonol glycosides remain unknown.

The hydrologic benefits of catchment-scale implementation of stormwater control measures (SCMs) in mitigating the adverse effects of urbanization are well established. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate that the Unified Stormwater Sizing Criteria (USSC) regulations, mandating the combined use of distributed and storage stormwater controls, do not protect channel stability, despite their effectiveness in reducing runoff from impervious surfaces. The USSC are the basis of SCM design in 11 U.

With the rise of bone tissue engineering (BET), 3D-printed HA/PCL scaffolds for bone defect repair have been extensively studied. However, little research has been conducted on the differences in osteogenic induction and regulation of macrophage (MPs) polarisation properties of HA/PCL scaffolds with different fibre orientations. Here, we applied 3D printing technology to prepare three sets of HA/PCL scaffolds with different fibre orientations (0-90, 0-90-135, and 0-90-45) to study the differences in physicochemical properties and to investigate the response effects of MPs and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on scaffolds with different fibre orientations.

Self-Assembling of Multilayered Polymorphs with Ion Beams.

Nano Lett

Polymorphism determines significant variations in materials' properties by lattice symmetry variation. If they are stacked together into multilayers, polymorphs may work as an alternative approach to the sequential deposition of layers with different chemical compositions. However, selective polymorph crystallization during conventional thin film synthesis is not trivial; changes of temperature or pressure when switching from one polymorph to another during synthesis may cause degradation of the structural quality.

Respiratory diseases represent a significant healthcare burden, as evidenced by the devastating impact of COVID-19. Biophysical models offer the possibility to anticipate system behavior and provide insights into physiological functions, advancements which are comparatively and notably nascent when it comes to pulmonary mechanics research. In this context, an Inverse Finite Element Analysis (IFEA) pipeline is developed to construct the first continuously ventilated three-dimensional structurally representative pulmonary model informed by both organ- and tissue-level breathing experiments from a cadaveric human lung.
