Purpose: To assess pain in the immediate postoperative period in cats submitted into two different celiotomy techniques for ovariohysterectomy.
Methods: Fourteen healthy female cats up to three years old with a mean weight 2.75 kg, without breed specification, were used in this double blind experiment. The animals were randomly assigned to two treatments: I- ovariohysterectomy by lateral approach (LA) or II - by midline approach (MA). The anesthesia consisted of acepromazine (0.1 mg.kg-1) and midazolam (0.25mg.kg-1) followed isoflurane vaporization to induce and maintain hypnosis. A bolus of fentanyl (5 μg.kg-1) was administered intravenously to provide intraoperative analgesia. After surgery, pain scores were assessed through a multidimensional composite pain scale at four different times.
Results: Generally all factors related to psychomotor changes and pain expression showed higher scores in cats neutered by LA, but only psychomotor changes and total pain score presented statistical differences (p<0.05). The animals that underwent lateral celiotomy showed higher pain scores, at 1, 4 and 6 hours after surgery.
Conclusions: Multidimensional analgesic scales were highly reliable. There was a tendency for the cats neutered by lateral approach to suffer more postoperative pain, including requiring a large number of analgesic rescues.

Background: Subclinical leaflet thrombosis (SLT) is a common complication after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Multidimensional CT (MDCT) is the main imaging mortality for the diagnosis of SLT but it enhances the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Our study aimed to use an innovative wearable acoustic cardiography (ACG) device to diagnose SLT as an alternative option.

Shallow lakes, including those located at the border between Europe and Asia (Kazakhstan), have become very prone to increasing salinity because of climate change. Most of the study area is in one of the fastest-warming parts of the globe. Our research, conducted in four lakes varying in water salinity level and located in western Kazakhstan in the steppe, semi-desert, and desert zones, can be used to predict biodiversity as indicators of the natural potential of ecosystems.

Background: Many countries have developed their country/nation-wide multidimensional area-based index on deprivation or socioeconomic status for resource allocation, service planning and research. However, whether each geographical unit proxied by a single index is sufficiently small to contain a relatively homogeneous population remains questionable. Globally, this is the first study that presents the distribution of domestic households by the territory-wide economic status index decile groups within each of the 2,252 small subunit groups (SSUGs) throughout Hong Kong, with a median study population of 1,300 and a median area of 42,400 m.

Background: Maternal smoking during pregnancy carries significant health risks for both mothers and infants, especially in vulnerable regions like rural and Appalachian areas with high smoking rates. Understanding the causes of high smoking rates in vulnerable areas is crucial for designing effective interventions to promote smoking cessation and reduce preventable health disparities.
Methods: Data from the Virginia Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS; years 2009-2020) comprised of 7,861 women aged over 18 were used in this cross-sectional observational study.
Semi-natural grasslands and their biodiversity decline rapidly, although they are key elements of agricultural landscapes. Therefore, there is a need for the re-establishment of semi-natural grasslands in intensively managed farmlands (e.g.
