In this study, a simple one-step template-free solution method was developed for the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOTs) with different morphologies by adjusting various ratios of oxidant (FeCl3·6H2O) to monomer (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)). The results from structural analysis showed that the structure of PEDOT was strongly affected by the oxidant/monomer ratio, and the polymerization degree, conjugation length, doping level, and crystallinity of PEDOT decreased with increasing of the oxidant/monomer ratio. The morphological analysis showed that PEDOT prepared from an oxidant/monomer ratio of 3:1 displayed a special coral-like morphology, and the branches of 'coral' would adjoin or grow together with increasing content of oxidant in the reaction medium; consequently, the morphology of PEDOT changed from coral to sheets (at an oxidant/monomer ratio of 9:1). The electrochemical analysis proved that the PEDOT prepared from an oxidant/monomer ratio of 3:1 had the lowest resistance and the highest specific capacitances (174 F/g) at a current density of 1 A/g with a capacity retention rate of 74% over 1,500 cycles, which indicated that the PEDOT with a coral-like morphology could be applied as a promising electrode material for supercapacitors.

The mechanochemical synthesis of polyanilines (PANIs), made by oxidative polymerization of anilines, is reviewed. First, previous knowledge of the polymerization reaction in solution is discussed to understand the effect of different parameters: oxidant/monomer ratio, added acid, oxidant, temperature and water content on the properties of the conducting polymers (molecular weight, degradation, doping/oxidation level, conductivity, and nanostructure). The work on mechanochemical polymerization (MCP) of anilines is analyzed in view of previous data in solution, and published data are critically reconsidered to clarify the interpretation of experimental results.

Conductive polymer polyindole derivatives have good conductivities and abundant functional groups, which would offer great potential for versatile applications including biosensors, bioelectronics and energy devices. However, the polyindole derivatives are mainly synthesized by the electropolymerization method on conductive electrode surfaces, which limits large-scale synthesis and practical applications. Herein, we explore a strategy of template-free, controllable and scalable synthesis of poly-5-aminoindole (PIn-5-NH) nanoparticles (NPs) and demonstrate the application of PIn-5-NH NPs in printable multiplexed electrochemical biosensors with ultra-high sensitivity.

New oxidative polymerization monomers-diarylaminodichlorobenzoquinones were synthesised by alkylating aniline, m-phenylenediamine and methanilic acid with chloranil. Oxidative polymerization of diarylaminodichlorobenzoquinones was studied for the first time in relation to the concentration of the monomer, acid, and oxidant/monomer ratio. It was found that the synthesized monomers are highly active in the polymerization reaction, and the oxidation rate grows with the increase in the acid concentration.

Synthesis of conjugated polymer-coated latex particles is an effective method to improve the poor processability of conjugated polyheterocycles. The key to success is to control the overlayer thickness so it is less than the size of the solvated layer of polymeric stabilizer. This paper presents a protocol to coat polymer latex particles with poly(2-aminothiazole) (PAT), which is a relatively new heterocyclic conjugated polymer.
