Design and optimization of a total vaporization technique coupled to solid-phase microextraction.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a popular sampling technique in which chemical compounds are collected with a sorbent-coated fiber and then desorbed into an analytical instrument such as a liquid or gas chromatograph. Typically, this technique is used to sample the headspace above a solid or liquid sample (headspace SPME), or to directly sample a liquid (immersion SPME). However, this work demonstrates an alternative approach where the sample is totally vaporized (total vaporization SPME or TV-SPME) so that analytes partition directly between the vapor phase and the SPME fiber. The implementation of this technique is demonstrated with polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB) and polyacrylate (PA) coated SPME fibers for the collection of nicotine and its metabolite cotinine in chloroform extracts. The most important method parameters were optimized using a central composite design, and this resulted in an optimal extraction temperature (96 °C), extraction time (60 min), and sample volume (120 μL). In this application, large sample volumes up to 210 μL were analyzed using a volatile solvent such as chloroform at elevated temperatures. The sensitivity of TV-SPME is nearly twice that of liquid injection for cotinine and nearly 6 times higher for nicotine. In addition, increased sampling selectivity of TV-SPME permits detection of both nicotine and cotinine in hair as biomarkers of tobacco use where in the past the detection of cotinine has not been achieved by conventional SPME.

Investigate the impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using different photosensitizers (PSs) such as indocyanine green (IG), curcumin (CC), and methylene blue (MB), with or without intracanal application of calcium hydroxide (CH), on the push-out bond strength of glass-fiber posts (GFPs) to intraradicular dentin, the chemical composition of the root substrate, and the sealing of the adhesive interface across different thirds of intraradicular dentin. A total of 112 bovine teeth underwent biomechanical preparation and were divided into eight experimental groups (n = 14 each): Negative control with deionized water; positive control with deionized water + CH; IG group with indocyanine green and infrared laser; IG + CH group; CC group with curcumin and blue LED; CC + CH group; MB group with methylene blue and red laser; and MB + CH group. The push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (n = 8), and scanning electron microscopy characterized the fracture patterns.

Interfacial solar vapor generation (ISVG) accompanied by photocatalytic degradation holds immense potential to mitigate water scarcity and pollution. Distinct from the two detached functional components (photothermal agent and photocatalyst) in a conventional evaporator, in this study, an all-in-one photothermal/catalytic agent, nitrogen-containing honeycomb carbon nanosheets (NHC), was engineered for synergistic high-efficiency steam generation and photocatalysis functions. It was demonstrated that the superoxide radical generated on the surface of NHC conferred its catalytic activity to the photodegradation of organic pollutants under full solar spectrum irradiation.
