Objectives: To retrospectively investigate the incidence of and factors associated with skin rashes and hepatotoxicity in HIV-infected patients who initiated combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) containing nevirapine plus two nucleos(t)ide reverse-transcriptase inhibitors.
Methods: The medical records of HIV-infected adult patients who started nevirapine-containing cART and continued follow-up for ≥4 weeks were reviewed at two hospitals in Taiwan between 2000 and 2012. Clinical data obtained at baseline and during follow-up were collected and analyzed.
Results: Of the 338 patients included in the analysis, 13.0% tested positive for hepatitis B virus surface antigen and 7.9% tested positive for anti-hepatitis C virus antibody. The incidence of rashes was 21.6% and of hepatotoxicity was 25.5%. On multiple logistic regression analysis, a two-fold or greater increase from the upper limit of normal levels of aminotransferases at baseline was associated with rashes (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 3.74, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.56-8.96); higher CD4 counts (aOR for per 50 cells/μl increase 1.51, 95% CI 1.12-2.03) and the concurrent use of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (aOR 14.01, 95% CI 1.98-98.95) were associated with hepatotoxicity.
Conclusions: Abnormal liver function at baseline was significantly associated with skin rashes, while a higher CD4 count and the concurrent use of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole were associated with hepatotoxicity after the initiation of nevirapine-containing cART in HIV-infected Taiwanese patients.

Sandflies, small insects primarily from the Psychodidae family, are commonly found in sandy, tropical, and subtropical regions. Most active during dawn and dusk, female sandflies feed on blood to facilitate egg production. In doing so, they can transmit infectious diseases that may cause symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle pain, anemia, skin rashes, and ulcers.

Radiation therapy is a primary modality for cancer treatment; however, it often leads to various degrees of skin injuries, ranging from mild rashes to severe ulcerations, for which no effective treatments are currently available. In this study, a multifunctional microsphere (PC@CuS-ALG) was synthesized by encapsulating phycocyanin-templated copper sulfide nanoparticles (PC@CuS) within alginate (ALG) using microfluidic technology. Phycocyanin, a natural protein derived from microalgae, shows abilities to scavenge reactive oxygen species, repair radiation-induced damage to skin cells, and ameliorate macrophage-related inflammatory responses.

Perioperative anaphylaxis is a serious entity with high morbidity and mortality. Perioperative anaphylaxis can be caused by any of the multitude of medications and substances used in anesthesia and surgery, and the most common causes include neuromuscular blocking agents, antibiotics, antiseptics, latex, and dyes. The differential diagnosis of perioperative anaphylaxis is wide from both an immunologic and a nonimmunologic standpoint.

Vaccination with the tetravalent live attenuated dengue virus (DENV) vaccines TV003 and TV005 causes a mild, relatively localized erythematous maculopapular skin rash in most dengue-naïve vaccinees. Human challenge model DENV strains, DENV2Δ30 and DENV3Δ30, trigger a confluent skin rash over most of the body in most unvaccinated participants. To determine the etiology of these rashes we performed in situ hybridization for DENV genome and assessed cellular infiltration by hematoxylin/eosin staining in skin biopsies from humans infected with live attenuated dengue vaccine DENV2Δ30 or DENV3Δ30 challenge strains.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) are the most common subtypes of the heterogeneous group of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL). With the expansion of the biologic treatment landscape, new treatment options have become available in recent years, most notably the C-C chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4)-directed monoclonal antibody mogamulizumab. Based on the phase III pivotal trial, mogamulizumab is recommended by the German S2k guidelines for the second-line treatment of stage IB and above SS and MF, after at least one prior systemic therapy.
