Background: Appendiceal tumors are found in about 1% of appendectomies performed and 0.5% of intestinal neoplasias. Appendiceal carcinoids are the predominant histology in this group and are usually casual after appendectomy for other reasons. The prognosis is excellent and survival is 95% at 5 years after surgery.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients with appendiceal carcinoid surgery in our hospital for 20 years (1990-2010) and survival at 5 years. We also discuss the need for additional treatment and testing for follow-up visits.

Results: 42 patients underwent surgery for appendiceal carcinoid tumor. 38 of them were operated on urgently, mostly for suspected acute appendicitis, without having reached the carcinoid tumor diagnosed preoperatively in any of them. The predominant symptomatology at admission was abdominal pain. Surgical treatment was appendectomy in 34 patients (12 laparoscopic), 7 patients required colon resections over intraoperatively by colonic involvement; only one patient required reoperation to complete right hemicolectomy. 2 patients had disseminated disease at diagnosis (liver metastases). The 5-year survival is over 95%, with no recurrence.

Conclusions: The appendiceal carcinoid tumor is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Appendectomy surgical treatment is usually sufficient, although colonic resections may be needed for dissemination. The 5-year survival is over 95%.

Efficacy and safety of low-dose TBI combined MAC regimen for HSCT in high-risk AML patients with active disease.

Ann Med

December 2025

Department of Hematology, Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, Westlake University, School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China.

Background: The management of high-risk acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) remains challenging, highlighting the need for innovative conditioning strategies beyond current regimens.

Methods: In the present single-arm study, a FACT regimen comprised of low-dose total body irradiation (TBI) with fludarabine, cytarabine and cyclophosphamide was employed to treat cytogenetically high-risk AML patients exhibiting pre-transplant active disease. This clinical trial is registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry with the registration number ChiCTR2000035111.

BACKGROUND Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt surgery is a widely used procedure for managing hydrocephalus; however, postoperative infections remain a serious complication, increasing morbidity and mortality. Known risk factors include prior surgeries, steroid use, and concurrent procedures. However, the role of liver cirrhosis, a condition that compromises immune function and predisposes patients to infections, has not been fully investigated in the context of neurosurgery.

Purpose: The association between nutritional risk status assessment and hospital mortality in older patients remains controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between nutritional risk on admission and in-hospital mortality, and explore the best Nutritional Risk Status Screening 2002 (NRS2002) threshold for predicting in-hospital mortality of older inpatients in China.

Method: The elderly inpatients were recruited from a hospital in Hunan Province, China.

Background: Medical advances in intensive care units (ICUs) have resulted in the emergence of a new patient population-those who survive the initial acute phase of critical illness, but require prolonged ICU stays and develop chronic critical symptoms. This condition, often termed Persistent Critical Illness (PerCI) or Chronic Critical Illness (CCI), remains poorly understood and inconsistently reported across studies, resulting in a lack of clinical practice use. This scoping review aims to systematically review and synthesize the existing literature on PerCI/CCI, with a focus on definitions, epidemiology, and outcomes for its translation to clinical practice.

Background: The equivalence between left upper lobectomy (LUL) and left upper tri-segmentectomy (LUTS) for stage I left upper non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains unclear. This study compares the perioperative and oncological outcomes of LUL and LUTS in this patient population.

Methods: This study included patients who underwent LUL or LUTS at West China Hospital of Sichuan University and Sichuan ShangJin Hospital between August 2018 and November 2023.
