A total of 568 normal feces from calves on a beef farm in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, in 2011-2012 were examined by RT-semi-nested PCR for rotavirus A (RVA) VP4 genes. Through partial sequencing and BLAST analyses of 84 VP4-positive specimens, we identified an avian-like RVA strain, N2342, which shares highest nucleotide identity (80.0%) with known avian-like bovine strain 993/83, in one specimen. Phylogenetic analysis also revealed a close genetic relationship between N2342 and avian RVAs, suggesting bird-to-cattle transmission. We observed frequent contact of wild birds with calves in the farm, suggesting that these birds were the source of the virus.

Unlabelled: A better understanding of viral factors that contribute to influenza A virus (IAV) airborne transmission is crucial for pandemic preparedness. A limited capacity for airborne transmission was recently observed in a human A(H9N2) virus isolate (A/Anhui-Lujiang/39/2018, AL/39) that possesses a leucine (L) residue at position HA1-226 (H3 numbering), indicative of human-like receptor binding potential. To evaluate the roles of the residue at this position in virus fitness and airborne transmission, a wild-type AL/39 (AL/39-wt) and a mutant virus (AL/39-HA1-L226Q) with a single substitution at position HA1-226 from leucine to glutamine (Q), a consensus residue in avian influenza viruses, were rescued and assessed in the ferret model.

Avian rotaviruses A (RVAs) are occasionally transmitted to animals other than the original hosts across species barriers. Information on RVAs carried by various bird species is important for identifying the origin of such interspecies transmission. Low pathogenic (LP) H7N9 avian influenza virus (AIV) emerged in 2013 and had spread widely over several months in China, experienced a noteworthy reduction in isolation rate in poultry and human since 2017. Here, we examined the transmission of H7N9 viruses to better understand viral spread and dissemination mechanisms. Three out of four viruses (2013-2016) could transmit in chickens through direct contact, and airborne transmission was confirmed in the JT157 (2016) virus.
