Published: December 2014

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that nonpharmacological interventions have an appropriate place in the treatment of major depressive disorders (MDDs) as both stand-alone and supplemental treatments. Because women may be reluctant to use psychotropic medications due to strong values or treatment preferences during specific reproductive events, clinicians need to be able to offer empirically based alternatives to medication. In this review, we present recent findings from studies of acupuncture, bright light therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, omega fatty acid supplementation, physical activity, and psychosocial intervention for women experiencing depressive symptoms in the contexts of menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause.

Behavioral Signature of Equine Gastric Discomfort? Preliminary Retrospective Clinical Observations.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

Havemeyer Equine Behavior Laboratory, Section of Reproduction and Behavior, Department of Clinical Studies, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center, Kennett Square, PA 19348, USA.

Gastric ulcer disease and other potentially painful gastric conditions are among the most common afflictions adversely affecting the welfare of domestic equids. A large percentage of affected animals may not display the classic signs of gastric disease, such as unexplained weight loss, poor hair coat, and inappetence until the disease becomes severe. As a clinical service within our equine referral hospital, we routinely evaluate 24-h video recorded samples of horses to assist clinicians in identifying subtle discomfort and potential sources or to scan for infrequent neurologic or cardiac-related behavioral events.

Background: Subarachnoid anesthesia is the primary anesthetic method for elective cesarean section surgery, characterized by rapidly taking effect and reliable analgesia. However, subarachnoid anesthesia is prone to cause a high block level, resulting in a high incidence of maternal hypotension. How to reduce the incidence of maternal hypotension under subarachnoid anesthesia is a practical problem that needs to be solved urgently in clinical practice.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of vacuum-induced intrauterine balloon tamponade (vIBT) using the modified Bakri system in a clinical setting.

Materials And Methods: This single-center observational study included women who had undergone vIBT for primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). Vacuum induction at 60 kPa in the uterus was continued for 1 h with 50-100 ml saline, and the balloon was promptly removed after the protocol was completed.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoscale, membrane-enclosed structures released by cells into the extracellular milieu. These vesicles encapsulate a diverse array of molecular constituents, including nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids, which provide insights into the physiological or pathological conditions of their parent cells. Despite their potential, the study of EV-derived DNA (EV-DNA) has gathered relatively limited attention.
