Aims: To compare Carnoy's solution (CS) and 10% neutral buffered formalin solution (NBF) as tissue fixatives in colorectal cancer specimens.

Methods And Results: Surgical specimens from patients with colorectal cancer were analysed. Three groups were studied, as follows: group 1 consisted of 16 paired samples fixed in CS and NBF; and groups 2 and 3 consisted of 14 prospective and 80 retrospective samples, respectively, both randomized for fixation in CS or NBF. Groups 1 and 2 were analysed for amount, quality and integrity of DNA. Morphological analysis, including some of the usual special stains and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), were also performed for group 1, and Sanger sequencing for group 2. Immunohistochemical (IHC) reactions for mismatch repair proteins were studied in groups 1 and 3. Fixative performances were similar for morphology, special stains, and IHC reactions, as well as for the amount, quality and integrity of extracted DNA. PCR amplification was not possible in two cases from CS group 1. Sanger sequencing gave conclusive results for the CS samples tested.

Conclusions: Carnoy's solution and NBF are equivalent fixatives for colorectal cancer specimens and are adequate for routine utilization in surgical and molecular pathology.

Introduction: To optimize RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) outcomes, we investigated preanalytical variables in malignant effusions containing metastatic breast cancer. We compared 2 processing methods-Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient enrichment and CytoLyt hemolysis-focusing on their effects on RNA quality, transcript abundance, and variant detection from cytospin slides, relative to fresh-frozen samples. Additionally, we compared read-based and Unique Molecular Identifier (UMI)-based library preparation methods.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi 110002, India. Electronic address:

Unicystic ameloblastoma is a distinct entity of ameloblastoma characterized by slow growth and locally aggressive behavior. This retrospective study aimed to assess the efficacy of different treatment modalities of unicystic ameloblastoma, focusing on clinico-radiological and histopathological features. Data from patients diagnosed with unicystic ameloblastoma were retrospectively analyzed.

Comparing 5-Fluorouracil Versus Modified Carnoy's Solution for the Treatment of Odontogenic Keratocysts: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

November 2024

Professor, Chair, and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, Newark, NJ.

Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to compare time to odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) recurrence with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) versus modified Carnoy's solution (MCS) following enucleation and curettage and peripheral ostectomy. The secondary aim was to compare the frequency (%) of permanent peripheral nerve injury characterized by hypoesthesia and neuropathic pain present at 12 months or more after surgery with 5-FU versus MCS.

Methods: The Cox hazard ratio was calculated to compare time to recurrence between the 2 groups.

A proposal for new genotoxic and cytotoxic endpoints to assess chemical effects on the red algae Ceramium tenuicorne.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

May 2024

EDF Recherche & Développement - Laboratoire National d'Hydraulique et Environnement, 6 Quai Watier, 78400, Chatou, France.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study aimed to assess the suitability of micronucleus and comet assay tests for detecting genotoxic effects in C. tenuicorne, but found that the tests were not effective due to the small and variable sizes of algal nuclei.
  • * Researchers successfully optimized observation techniques and identified two endpoints (nucleus count and mitotic cell frequency) to evaluate chemical effects on the algae, specifically after exposure to cadmium chloride and maleic hydrazide.

Article Synopsis
  • The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a common type of jaw cyst, making up 10%-14% of all jaw cysts and known for its high rate of recurrence.
  • Aggressive treatments like jaw resection and marsupialization are often necessary to manage OKCs.
  • In a case study involving a 12-year-old girl, conservative marsupialization with Carnoy's solution and iodoform packing showed no recurrence of the OKC during a year of follow-up.
