Introduction: 16 million German-language free-text laboratory test results are the basis of the daily diagnostic routine of 17 laboratories within the University Hospital Erlangen. As part of the Medical Informatics Initiative, the local data integration centre is responsible for the accessibility of routine care data for medical research. Following the core data set, international interoperability standards such as FHIR and the English-language medical terminology SNOMED CT are used to create harmonised data.

COVID-19 vaccine-related conspiracy narratives skyrocketed in social media in the first year of the pandemic. Science communicators have tried to debunk false information as did Vlad Mixich, a Romanian public health expert, who tried to explain on Facebook why the vaccine cannot modify the human DNA. Drawing on the literature on metaphor as a discourse phenomenon, this paper uses a discourse-led approach to metaphor analysis to identify and analyze the metaphors used by Mixich to explain how vaccines work and the mRNA technology underlying the COVID-19 vaccine.

Purpose: The audiology literature is rich with work in the area of clinical masking, yet there is a perception that learning how to mask is difficult. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of audiology doctoral students and recent graduates in learning clinical masking.

Method: This exploratory study used a cross-sectional survey design, sampling doctor of audiology (AuD) students and recent graduates to probe the perceived effort required and challenges experienced in learning clinical masking.

Every day in hospitals around the world, millions of interspecialty referrals are made to obtain advice on the optimal care and management of patients. In the UK, the brunt of this work is undertaken by junior doctors with less clinical experience than the specialist colleagues to which they refer. A survey of 283 junior doctors revealed that colleagues were underconfident when making referrals and struggled to know which specialty to contact, how to reach the specialty and what clinical information to include in the referral.
