Having briefly analyzed the metabolism of ethanol in the human organism, the author describes hepatocellular damage induced by chronic alcohol abuse in old men. The evidence of great resistance of the senile liver to alcohol-induced damage is stressed as well as histological, biohumoral and clinical features of steatosis, chronic hepatitis, acute hepatitis and cirrhosis. Further, the author discusses the most suitable dietary and pharmacologic measures to be utilized in the above-mentioned phase of the liver disease due to chronic alcohol abuse.

Aims: Central (CA) and obstructive apneas (OA) are highly prevalent in patients with chronic heart failure (HF) and transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is an increasingly recognized HF etiology. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and impact of CA and OA in patients with ATTR-CA.

Methods: Consecutive patients with ATTR-CA underwent a 24-hour ambulatory cardiorespiratory monitoring to evaluate the prevalence and severity of breathing disorders.

Distinct Profiles and New Pharmacological Targets for Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Rev Cardiovasc Med

July 2024

Cardiology Section, Department of Medical and Surgical Specialties, Radiological Sciences and Public Health, Spedali Civili Hospital and University of Brescia, 25123 Brescia, Italy.

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a multifactorial condition with a variety of pathophysiological causes and morphological manifestations. The inclusion criteria and patient classification have become overly simplistic due to the customary differentiation regarding the ejection fraction (EF) cutoff. EF is considered a measure of systolic function; nevertheless, it only represents a portion of the true contractile state and has been shown to have certain limits due to methodological and hemodynamic irregularities.

Prognostic Value of a Laboratory Index of Frailty in Older Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: The COMEPA Study.

J Frailty Aging

July 2024

Nicola Veronese. Geriatric Unit, Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, University of Palermo, Via del Vespro, 141, 90127 Palermo, Italy. Email: 4.

Background: Several indexes based on clinical and laboratory tests to identify frailty and to predict mortality have been produced. Only two studies, mixing clinical and laboratory parameters were made about a frailty index made of laboratory tests (FI-Lab) and mortality in older patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The aim of this study was to explore the accuracy and precision of an FI-Lab constructed with some common bio-humoral tests and mortality in a cohort of patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Echocardiography-Derived Forward Left Ventricular Output Improves Risk Prediction in Systolic Heart Failure.

J Am Soc Echocardiogr

Health Science Interdisciplinary Center, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy; Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio, Pisa, Italy. Electronic address:

Background: Although it is widely used to classify patients with heart failure (HF), the prognostic role of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is debated. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that echocardiographic measures of forward left ventricular (LV) output, being more representative of cardiac hemodynamics, might improve risk prediction in a large cohort of patients with HF with systolic dysfunction.

Methods: Consecutive stable patients with HF with LVEF <50% on guideline-recommended therapies undergoing echocardiography including the evaluation of forward LV output (i.

Article Synopsis
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to various outcomes, from benign lesions to invasive cancers, particularly affecting the cervix and head and neck regions.
  • The way HPV affects individuals varies greatly, influenced by the virus's ability to stay hidden and dodge the host's immune response, with the oral mucosa being a key area of infection.
  • The review emphasizes the need for awareness about the potential for malignant transformation in HPV-related lesions, highlighting the importance of prevention and early detection in improving outcomes for those affected.
