Teuri Island, Hokkaido in Japan is an important place for seabirds breeding. We measured the concentrations of heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) and a metalloid (As) in rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) (n = 7), thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia) (n = 2), spectacled guillemot (Cepphus carbo) (n = 6), slaty-backed gull (Larus schistisagus) (n = 15), jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) (n = 3), Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonica) (n = 6) and Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus azonus) (n = 2). Spectacled guillemot had high As concentrations, with its source being their feeding habitat. Concentration of Hg in kidney of jungle crow was higher than other seabird species at Teuri.

Background: Hearing loss (HL) is a common sensory disorder in humans. Studies on the relationship between arsenic, which is a highly toxic and widely distributed heavy metal with a health risk to humans, and hearing status in humans are contradictory and mostly focused on people living in arsenic-contaminated areas. This study investigated the association between urinary arsenic levels and hearing threshold shifts in the general population in the United States.

Iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides and natural organic matter (NOM) are active substances ubiquitously found in sediments. Their coupled transformation plays a crucial role in the fate and release risk of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in lake sediments. Therefore, it is essential to systematically obtain relevant knowledge to elucidate their potential mechanism, and whether HMs provide immobilization or mobilization effect in this ternary system.

A pot experiment was conducted on arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) co-contaminated soil to discern the influence of varying proportions of pig manure compost (PM) vis-à-vis chemical fertilizers (NPK) on the mitigation of Cd and As absorption by rice. Our findings illustrated that by increasing the PM proportions from 25 to 100%, it manifested a statistically significant reduction in the mobilized fractions of Cd, accounting for up to 77% reduction in soil CaCl-Cd concentrations. Conversely, the NaHCO-As reactions were contingent on the distinct PM application rates.

Cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, poses significant global concern. A strain of the genus Pseudomonas, CD3, demonstrating significant cadmium resistance (up to 3 mM CdCl.HO) was identified from a pool of 26 cadmium-resistant bacteria isolated from cadmium-contaminated soil samples from Malda, India.
