Background/aims: We classified intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) into two categories, the white and non-white villi types, and evaluated their clinical characteristics and therapeutic responses.
Methods: Of the 988 patients who underwent double-balloon enteroscopy, 14 consecutive patients (7 men and 7 women, median age at onset 34 years) were enrolled with immunohistochemically confirmed IL with protein-losing enteropathy.
Results: Enteroscopically the white villi type (n = 8) showed white plaques and white-tipped villi were scattered in the small bowel, while non-white villi type (n = 6) showed that apparently normal but under more detailed observation, low and round villi with a normal color were diffused. The serum albumin levels and fecal α1-antitrypsin clearance before treatment were significantly worse in the non-white villi type (p = 0.017 and 0.039, respectively), whereas the serum immunoglobulin A and M levels were significantly lower in the white villi type (p = 0.010 and 0.046, respectively). At gastroscopy, a non-cirrhotic snakeskin appearance was significantly observed in the non-white villi type (p = 0.015). The corticosteroid response was better in the non-white villi type (p = 0.015).
Conclusion: Two distinct subgroups were found in IL. This classification was useful in pathophysiological clustering and in predicting the therapeutic response.

Porcine rotavirus A (RVA) is one of the major etiological agents of diarrhea in piglets and constitutes a significant threat to the swine industry. A molecular epidemiological investigation was conducted on 2422 diarrhea samples from Chinese pig farms to enhance our understanding of the molecular epidemiology and evolutionary diversity of RVA. The findings revealed an average RVA positivity rate of 42% (943/2422), and the study included data from 26 provinces, primarily in the eastern, southern and southwestern regions.

Enteric pathogen rotavirus (RV) primarily infects mature enterocytes at the tips of the intestinal villi; however, the role of secretory Paneth and goblet cells in RV pathogenesis remains unappreciated. Atoh1 knockout mice (Atoh1cKO) were used to conditionally delete Paneth, goblet, and enteroendocrine cells in the epithelium to investigate the role of secretory cells in RV infection. Unexpectedly, the number of infected enterocytes and the amount of RV shedding in the stool were greatly decreased following secretory cell deletion.

The comb, as a secondary sexual characteristic in chickens, serves as an important indicator of sexual maturity and potential reproductive. This study explored the relationship between comb types and production performance in Tianfu G01 chickens. Single-comb hens exhibited significantly lower laying rates compared to rose-comb hens during specific weeks (24-26, 27-28, 30, 32-34, and 38-43) but had higher average egg weights at 22, 23, 33, and 36-43 weeks.

The benefits of plant essential oils (EO) on the health of animals have been frequently reported, but their alteration of lipid metabolism in obese pigs has yet to be explored. This study aimed to assess the impact of EO blends (oregano, cinnamon and lemon oils) on growth performance, meat physicochemical parameters, intestinal health and lipid metabolism in the small intestine of weaned Bamei (a kind of obese-type pig) piglets.
