Background: Iron is an essential micronutrient for cell survival and growth; however, excess of this metal drives ferroptosis. Although maternal iron imbalance and placental hypoxia are independent contributors to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, the mechanisms by which their interaction impinge on maternal and placental health remain elusive.

Methods: We used placentae from normotensive and preeclampsia pregnancy cohorts, human H9 embryonic stem cells differentiated into cytotrophoblast-like cells, and placenta-specific preeclamptic mice.

Dissecting AlphaFold2's capabilities with limited sequence information.

Bioinform Adv

November 2024

Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Bern, Bern 3012, Switzerland.

Summary: Protein structure prediction aims to infer a protein's three-dimensional (3D) structure from its amino acid sequence. Protein structure is pivotal for elucidating protein functions, interactions, and driving biotechnological innovation. The deep learning model AlphaFold2, has revolutionized this field by leveraging phylogenetic information from multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) to achieve remarkable accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Introduction: Opium and cigarette smoking have been identified as significant cancer risk factors. Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified opium as a Group 1 carcinogen in 2020.

Method: Using data from a multicenter case-control study in Iran called IROPICAN, involving 717 cases of bladder cancer and 3477 controls, we assessed the interactions on the causal additive scale between opium use and cigarette smoking and their attributing effects to evaluate public health relevance and test for different mechanistic interaction forms to provide new insights for developing of bladder cancer.

Development and validation of a UV-Vis spectrophotometric method for estimation of total content of chalcone.

MethodsX

June 2025

Observatory of Drug-Herb Interactions, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra, Health Science Campus, Azinhaga Santa Comba, Coimbra, Portugal.

In this study, a straightforward spectrophotometric method was developed for quantifying the total content of chalcones in a sample. The method exhibits linearity, accuracy, precision, repeatability, and enables the estimation of total chalcone content in trans-chalcone equivalents for a sample diluted in carbon tetrachloride and added to antimony pentachloride. The analytical wavelength was determined to be 390 nm.
