The reference electrode is a key component in electrochemical measurements, yet it remains a challenge to implement a reliable reference electrode in miniaturized electrochemical sensors. Here we explore experimentally and theoretically an alternative approach based on redox cycling which eliminates the reference electrode altogether. We show that shifts in the solution potential caused by the lack of reference can be understood quantitatively, and determine the requirements for accurate measurements in miniaturized systems in the absence of a reference electrode.

Thiabendazole (TBZ), a recalcitrant fungicide, is frequently applied in postharvest fruit treatment and generates significant volumes of industrial wastewater (WW) that conventional treatment plants cannot handle. This explores a bioelectrochemical system (BES) for TBZ degradation using Tunisian hypersaline sediments (THSs) as inoculum. Four sets of BES, along with biological controls, were tested using THS subjected to different levels of TBZ biostimulation.

Recently, the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) of Brazil recalled several lots of sartan drugs due to the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). NDMA is a highly potent carcinogenic contaminant that harms human health; therefore, the presence of NDMA in sartan drugs must be checked through appropriate analytical methods. This work successfully developed a new analytical method for determining NDMA without chemical pretreatment of losartan and olmesartan drug samples.

The combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in the ultraviolet spectral region (UV-SERS) with resonance Raman scattering enhancement, referred to as UV-SERRS, enables ultrasensitive and reliable detection of biomolecules because of the strong electronic transition of many biologically important compounds in UV region. Adenine solution studies by UV-Raman spectroscopy revealed pre-resonant enhancement of various modes by 2-16 times at 325 nm excitation wavelength. Adsorption and structural properties of adenine on a cobalt electrode were probed by UV-SERS.

Purpose: Cochlear implants (CI) are the most successful bioprosthesis in medicine probably due to the tonotopic anatomy of the auditory pathway and of course the brain plasticity. Correct placement of the CI arrays, respecting the inner ear anatomy are therefore important. The ideal trajectory to insert a cochlear implant array is defined by an entrance through the round window membrane and continues as long as possible parallel to the basal turn of the cochlea.

Introduction: Haemodynamic atrioventricular delay (AVD) optimisation has primarily focussed on signals that are not easy to acquire from a pacing system itself, such as invasive left ventricular catheterisation or arterial blood pressure (ABP). In this study, standard clinical central venous pressure (CVP) signals are tested as a potential alternative.
Methods: Sixteen patients with a temporary pacemaker after cardiac surgery were studied.
