The present study was carried out to evaluate the neurotoxic effect and biochemical alteration as a result of imidacloprid (IMI) exposure and potential protective role of curcumin (Cur) against it in rats. Rats were administered with IMI (45 and 90 mg/kg body weight; orally) and Cur (100 mg/kg body weight; orally) alone and in combinations for the period of 28 days. Significant decrease in spontaneous locomotor activity (SLA) and pain threshold were observed in animals treated with the IMI, while the effect was attenuated by the Cur co-treatment. Acetylcholinestaerase, ATPase and serum biochemicals such as creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, sorbitol dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly decreased (p < 0.05) as result of IMI exposure and these enzyme levels were reversed in groups treated with the Cur in IMI treatments. Also, IMI caused a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in antioxidant enzymes activity and non-enzymes level with increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO), while Cur administration in IMI treatments restored the altered activity of antioxidant system with decrease in LPO. The IMI induced brain damage was minimized as result of Cur co-administration in rats. In conclusion, Cur restores the altered functions of biochemical markers and neurotoxicity in IMI exposed rats.

The current study investigates the systemic effects of imidacloprid, one of the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticides, on the liver and gut microbiome of rats in detail. With consideration of recent discussions on the potential harmfulness of imidacloprid to environmental and human health, the aim was to investigate the influence of this compound in the framework of controlled exposure at different dosages, namely, IMI-5, IMI-10, and IMI-30. Histopathological examination showed that liver morphology changed significantly with the dose, including in terms of cellular disorganization and signs of stress, with an alteration in the hepatic architecture.

In this study, we constructed a pH/laccase dual responsive drug delivery system, denoted as IMI@(CMCS+SL)n, capable of modulating wall thickness and drug release via the layer-by-layer deposition of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and sodium lignosulfonate (SL). The IMI@(CMCS+SL)n microcapsules was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) EDS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and dynamic light scattering techniques (DLS) analysis. IMI@(CMCS+SL)n demonstrated not only a high loading capacity (exceeding 90 %) but also exhibited exceptional performance in sustained release and anti-termite activity of IMI.

Imidacloprid (IMI) and cadmium (Cd) have been shown to be harmful to mammals separately, but their combined toxicity to mammals remains largely unknown. In this study, biochemical analysis (oxidative stress and serum indicators of liver and kidney function), pathological sections and multiomics (metabolomics and transcriptomics) methods were used to investigate the changes and mechanisms of liver and kidney in mice coexposed to IMI and Cd. Biochemical analysis and pathological section results showed that oxidative stress, organ function, and cell damage were aggravated after the combination of the two methods.
