This communication describes a novel strategy to achieve programmable shape transformation of hybrid hydrogel sheets by modulating both the in-plane and out-of-plane mismatches in mechanical properties. Both our experimental and computational results demonstrate that the shape transformation of hybrid hydrogel sheets shows rich features (e.g., rolling direction, axis, chirality, etc.) and versatile tunability (e.g., via various external stimuli, material properties, pattern geometry, etc.). This work can provide guidance for designing soft materials that are able to undergo more precise and complex shape transformation.

Metal-organic framework-based hybrids (MOFzyme) have promising applications in colorimetric aptasensors due to their highly efficient and stable catalytic activity. However, their efficient application in biosensors remains a challenging issue due to the limited reaction site and amorphous structure. Herein, we encapsulated catalase inside MOF cavities to prepare an MOFzyme with many functional groups on its surface, and the functional groups were utilized for the subsequent integration of MOFzyme into the hyaluronic acid-DNA hydrogel.

Multiplexed microRNA (miRNA) detection has proven valuable in disease diagnosis; yet, the development of advanced tools for their analysis remains a subject of broad interest. Here, we propose a novel single-particle method for multiplexed miRNA detection using self-directed hydrogel microspheres, which feature supersegmented compartments for loading analyte probes and an air-encapsulated region that grants the microsphere a unique preferred posture in aqueous solutions. By exploiting microfluidic technology, we can widely adjust the size of the microspheres and the number of compartments can be widely adjusted.

Liposomes are gaining interest in food and pharmaceutical applications due to their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. However, they suffer from low colloidal stability, leakage of encapsulated substances, and poor resistance to intestinal digestive conditions. To address these issues, propolis extract (PE) was encapsulated within a hybrid system combining liposomes and hydrogels.

Chronic wound healing is often hindered by long-term inflammation and redox imbalance. Herbal medicine, with its rich medicinal components such as polysaccharides, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and small-molecule nutrients, has gained attention for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Xanthium strumarium (XS) is a potent anti-inflammatory herb that has shown promise in treating conditions like rhinitis and may have specific benefits for chronic skin wounds.

Controllable macromolecular architecture formation via polysaccharide integrated ternary copolymerization was explored in the design of amino-functionalized n-alkyl methacrylate ester-based biohybrids. Ternary poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate-co-hydroxypropyl methacrylate)/sodium-alginate, PDGH/ALG, hybrids were designed using anionic polysaccharide through in-situ radical polymerization. An insight into the effect of ALG on physicochemical structure of ternary hybrids, particularly the interactions between polymeric chains, was created.
