In addition to the major functions performed by in the cell, mitochondria play a major role in cell-light interaction. Accordingly it is generally accepted that mitochondria are crucial in cell photobiomodulation; however a variety of biomolecules themselves proved to be targets of light irradiation. We describe whether and how mitochondria can interact with monochromatic and narrow band radiation in the red and near IR optical regions with dissection of both structural and functional effects likely leading to photobiostimulation. Moreover we also report that a variety of biomolecules localized in mitochondria and/or in other cell compartments including cytochrome c oxidase, some proteins, nucleic acids and adenine nucleotides are light sensitive with major modifications in their biochemistry. All together the reported investigations show that the elucidation of the mechanism of the light interaction with biological targets still remains to be completed, this needing further research, however the light sensitivity of a variety of molecules strongly suggests that photobiomodulation could be used in both in photomedicine and in biotechnology.

Emerging research highlights the potential of specific light spectral regions to significantly enhance microalgae biomass production compared to conventional white light illumination. However, conflicting results of existing studies on the most optimal wavelengths reveal a knowledge gap regarding the underlying factors for optimal spectrum. The present paper aims to address this gap by critically analyzing existing studies on light spectral quality and its impact on microalgae growth.

Inelastic interaction between coherent light with constant frequency and free electrons enables periodic phase modulation of electron wave packets leading to periodic sidebands in the electron energy spectra. In this Letter, we propose a generalization of the interaction by considering linearly chirped electron wave packets interacting with chirped optical fields. We theoretically demonstrate that when matching the chirp parameters of the electron and light waves, the interaction leads to partial monochromatization of the electron spectra in one of the energy sidebands.

Metal halide perovskites and perovskite-related organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) have recently emerged as a new class of luminescent materials for light emitting diodes (LEDs), owing to their unique and remarkable properties, including near-unity photoluminescence quantum efficiencies, highly tunable emission colors, and low temperature solution processing. While substantial progress has been made in developing monochromatic LEDs with electroluminescence across blue, green, red, and near-infrared regions, achieving highly efficient and stable white electroluminescence from a single LED remains a challenging and under-explored area. Here, a facile approach to generating white electroluminescence is reported by combining narrow sky-blue emission from metal halide perovskites and broadband orange/red emission from zero-dimensional (0D) OMHHs.

Structural colors are highly valued for their eco-friendliness and long-term color stability, deriving from the interaction of structural units with incident light. However, traditional methods for adjusting structural colors typically involve altering the size of structural units, a labor-intensive process necessitating specific diameters for each desired color. Moreover, colors exhibited by photonic crystal materials are monochromatic colors with a narrow wavelength range, failing to exhibit polychromatic colors.

Microalgal biotechnology offers a promising platform for the sustainable production of diverse renewable bioactive compounds. The key distinction from other microbial bioprocesses lies in the critical role that light plays in cultures, as it serves as a source of environmental information to control metabolic processes. Therefore, we can use these criteria to design a bioprocess that aims to stimulate the accumulation of target molecules by controlling light exposure.
