Background: The kidney, an essential organ of the human body, can suffer pathological damage that can potentially have serious adverse consequences on the human body and even affect life. Furthermore, the majority of kidney-induced illnesses are frequently not readily identifiable in their early stages. Once they have progressed to a more advanced stage, they impact the individual's quality of life and burden the family and broader society.

The kidney, an essential excretory organ of the body, performs a series of crucial physiological functions such as waste removal, maintenance of electrolyte and acid-base balance, and endocrine regulation. Due to its rich blood flow and high metabolic activity, the kidney is susceptible to damage. Currently, kidney injury is classified into acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), both of which are associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality on a global scale.

Aquatic environments serve as critical repositories for pollutants and have significantly accumulated micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) due to the extensive production and application of plastic products. While the disease resistance and immunity of fish are closely linked to the condition of their aquatic habitats, the specific effects of nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) within these environments on fish immune functions are still not fully understood. The present study utilized zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos and larvae as model organisms to examine the impacts of polystyrene NPs (100 nm) and MPs (5 μm) on fish immune responses.

Various types of systemic amyloidosis can wreak havoc on the architecture and functioning of the kidneys. Amyloidosis should be suspected in patients with worsening kidney function, proteinuria, and multisystem involvement, but isolated kidney involvement also is possible. Confirming the amyloidosis type and specific organ dysfunction is of paramount importance to select the appropriately tailored treatment and aim for better survival while avoiding treatment-associated toxicities.
