Synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted-2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-one derivatives catalyzed by dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid was carried out in 80-92% yields at 40-42 °C within 1-2 h in aqueous media via one-pot three-component condensation of isatoic anhydride, aromatic aldehyde and amine under ultrasound irradiation. Convenient work-up procedures, mild reaction conditions, avoiding the use of organic solvents, and friendly to environment are the salient features of this protocol.

In a previous report on the enzymatic synthesis of the conductive emeraldine salt form of polyaniline (PANI-ES) in aqueous solution using PADPA (-aminodiphenylamine) as monomer, horseradish peroxidase isoenzyme C (HRPC) was applied as a catalyst at pH = 4.3 with HO as a terminal oxidant. In that work, anionic vesicles were added to the reaction mixture for (i) guiding the reaction to obtain poly(PADPA) products that resemble PANI-ES, and for (ii) preventing product precipitation (known as the "template effect").

Phytosterol unsaturated fatty acid esters show much higher oil solubility than free phytosterol. Thus, development of a green and low-cost method for the preparation of phytosterol fatty acid esters is highly desirable in the food industry. Herein, we have developed a simple chemical method toward efficient preparation of phytosterol linoleic acid esters at very mild temperature (60 °C) using 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) as the catalyst.

The synthesis of undecylenic acid partial esters can be performed at mild temperature with a classical esterification reaction catalyzed by dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA). A semi-empirical molecular modeling on the different reaction intermediates indicates that DBSA can strongly decrease their heats of formation through hydrogen bonding. Diester formation seems to be thermodynamically favored with a selectivity for alpha, alpha, or alpha, beta forms that depend on the geometry of the catalyst-intermediate configuration.

Many previous studies have shown that (i) the oxidation of aniline or the aniline dimer -aminodiphenylamine (PADPA) in a slightly acidic aqueous solution can be catalyzed with heme peroxidases or multicopper laccases and that (ii) subsequent reactions lead to oligomeric or polymeric products, which resemble chemically synthesized polyaniline in its conductive emeraldine salt form (PANI-ES), provided that (iii) an anionic "template" is present in the reaction medium. Good templates are anionic polyelectrolytes, micelles, or vesicles. Under optimal conditions, their presence directs the reactions in a positive way toward the desired formation of PANI-ES-type products.

Polyaniline is a conductive polymer with distinctive optical and electrical properties. Its enzymatic synthesis is an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of harsh oxidants and extremely acidic conditions. 7D5L, a high-redox potential laccase developed in our lab, is the biocatalyst of choice for the synthesis of green polyaniline (emeraldine salt) due to its superior ability to oxidize aniline and kinetic stability at the required polymerization conditions (pH 3 and presence of anionic surfactants) as compared with other fungal laccases.
