Objectives: To determine inter- and intra-tester reliability of strength measurements during maximal electrically induced contractions (MEIC) using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD).

Methods: Thirty-seven healthy young female adults, mean age (SD) 23.4 (2.4) years, were tested by two examiners during two sessions, with order of examiners randomized. Biphasic pulses (phase duration--300 µs; pulse frequency--75 Hz) were employed in order to induce contractions of the quadriceps femoris muscle at a maximally tolerated current level. Strength of maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) and of MEIC was recorded with a HHD utilizing a stabilization belt.

Results: Good to excellent inter- and intra-tester reliability were determined with intra-class correlation coefficients ranging between 0.8 and 0.9, and no bias in the Bland-Altman plots. The 95% repeatability ranged between 8.7 and 13.0 kg for the MVIC and MEIC, and between 20.7 and 25.6% for the % MVIC.

Conclusion: Our results confirm previous findings indicating good to excellent reliability of quadriceps femoris muscle MVIC assessment with a HHD. However, a high 95% repeatability range indicates the HHD is not sufficiently reliable as an indicator of the force level attained during electrically induced contractions. Other methods need to be investigated to assist in determining whether MEIC have reached therapeutic levels.

Tinnitus, a widespread condition affecting numerous individuals worldwide, remains a significant challenge due to limited effective therapeutic interventions. Intriguingly, patients using cochlear implants (CIs) have reported significant relief from tinnitus symptoms, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and intracochlear implantation risks cochlear damage and hearing loss. This study demonstrates that targeted intracochlear electrical stimulation (ES) in guinea pigs with noise-induced hearing loss reversed tinnitus-related maladaptive plasticity in the cochlear nucleus (CN), characterized by reduced auditory innervation, increased somatosensory innervation, and diminished inhibitory neural networks.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical technique with excellent molecular specificity. However, separate pristine nanoparticles produce relatively weak Raman signals. It is necessary to focus on increasing the "hot-spot" density generated at the nanogaps between the adjacent nanoparticles (second-generation SERS hotspot), thus significantly boosting the Raman signal by creating an electromagnetic field.

Defect-Induced Electron Localization Promotes D2O Dissociation and Nitrile Adsorption for Deuterated Amines.

Electrochemical reductive deuteration of nitriles is a promising strategy for synthesizing deuterated amines with D2O as the deuterated source. However, this reaction suffers from high overpotentials owing to the sluggish D2O dissociation kinetics and high thermodynamic stability of the C≡N triple bond. Here, low-coordinated copper (LC-Cu) is designed to decrease the overpotential for the electrosynthesis of the precursor of Melatonin-d4, 5-methoxytryptamine-d4, by 100 mV with a 68% yield (Faraday efficiency), which is 4 times greater than that of high-coordinated copper (HC-Cu).

Advances in the semiconductor industry have been limited owing to the constraints imposed by silicon-based CMOS technology; hence, innovative device design approaches are necessary. This study focuses on "more than Moore" approaches, specifically in neuromorphic computing. Although MoS devices have attracted attention as neuromorphic computing candidates, their performances have been limited due to environment-induced perturbations to carrier dynamics and the formation of defect states.

The anisotropic properties of materials profoundly influence their electronic, magnetic, optical, and mechanical behaviors and are critical for a wide range of applications. In this study, the anisotropic characteristics of Ni-based van der Waals materials, specifically NiTe and its alloy NiTeSe, utilizing a combination of comprehensive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are explored. Unlike 1T-NiTe, which exhibits trigonal in-plane symmetry, the substitution of Te with Se in NiTe (resulting in the NiTeSe alloy) induces a pronounced in-plane anisotropy.
