Adult neurogenesis has been the center of attention for decades. Neuroscientists hope to understand the mechanism underlying this phenomenon that might provide a unique perception of brain repair in future. Neurogenesis is referred to the process in which neuronal stem cells and progenitors generate new neurons in non-pathologic setting. Although there are some similarities between two neurogenetic regions including hippocampus and olfactory bulb, however there are some important differences. Regardless of the unique functional roles of ongoing neurogenesis in olfactory bulb and hippocampus, the differences are in terms of consequence of neurogenesis, origin of newly born neurons, responding receptors to nicotine exposure, neuronal migration and GABAergic input between two regions. In this paper, we have briefly reviewed the differences of adult neurogenesis between olfactory bulb and hippocampus.

Introduction: Neural stem cells from the subventricular zone (SVZ) neurogenic niche provide neurons that integrate in the olfactory bulb circuitry. However, in response to cortical injuries, the neurogenic activity of the SVZ is significantly altered, leading to increased number of neuroblasts with a modified migration pattern that leads cells towards the site of injury. Despite the increased neurogenesis and migration, many newly generated neurons fail to survive or functionally integrate into the cortical circuitry.

A generative model of the connectome with dynamic axon growth.

Connectome generative models, otherwise known as generative network models, provide insight into the wiring principles underpinning brain network organization. While these models can approximate numerous statistical properties of empirical networks, they typically fail to explicitly characterize an important contributor to brain organization-axonal growth. Emulating the chemoaffinity-guided axonal growth, we provide a novel generative model in which axons dynamically steer the direction of propagation based on distance-dependent chemoattractive forces acting on their growth cones.

Ondansetron blocks fluoxetine effects in immature neurons in the adult rat piriform cortex layer II.

Neuronal structural plasticity gives the adult brain the capacity to adapt to internal or external factors by structural and molecular changes. These plastic processes seem to be mediated, among others, by the action of the neurotransmitter serotonin through specific receptors (5-HTRs). Previous studies have shown that the maturation of granule cells in the hippocampus is mediated by 5-HT3.

Mammalian sterile20-like kinase 1 (MST1), a serine/threonine kinase frequently expressed, has emerged as pivotal modulator of multiple physiological and pathological conditions such as cellular growth, programmed cell death, oxidative stress, neurodegeneration, inflammation, and synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system. Various neurological diseases are associated with the activation of MST1. Epilepsy is a severe neurological disorder characterized by abrupt abnormal electrical activity in the brain and recurring spontaneous seizures.
