Introduction: In this study, we analyzed the crosstalk in mechanomyographic (MMG) signals generated by the extensor digitorum (ED), extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU), and flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscles of the forearm during wrist flexion (WF) and extension (WE) and radial (RD) and ulnar (UD) deviations.

Methods: Twenty right-handed men (mean ± SD age=26.7 ± 3.83 years) performed the wrist postures. During each wrist posture, MMG signals were detected using 3 accelerometers. Peak cross-correlations were used to quantify crosstalk.

Results: The level of crosstalk ranged from 1.69 to 64.05%. The wrist postures except the RD did not influence the crosstalk significantly between muscle pairs. However, muscles of the forearm compartments influenced the level of crosstalk for each wrist posture significantly.

Conclusions: The results may be used to improve our understanding of the mechanics of the forearm muscles during wrist postures.

Evaluating the performance of a new ergonomic laparoscopic needle holder for intracorporeal suturing.

In laparoscopy, the absence of ergonomics in the instruments affects the performance and efficiency of the surgeon, increasing the likelihood of developing musculoskeletal injuries. This article presents the development of a laparoscopic needle holder with an ergonomic handle and the experience in its use with surgeons in the intracorporeal suturing task. The handle of the laparoscopic needle holder consists of a semi-spherical piece that easily adapts to the palm of the surgeon's hand and improves the posture and ergonomics of the wrist, allowing the direct transmission of rotational movements around the longitudinal axis of the instrument towards the tip.

Modern treat-to-target management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves titration of drug therapy to achieve remission, requiring close monitoring of disease activity through frequent clinical assessments. Accelerometry offers a novel method for continuous remote monitoring of RA activity by capturing fluctuations in mobility, sedentary behaviours, physical activity and sleep patterns over prolonged periods without the expense, inconvenience and environmental impact of extra hospital visits. We aimed to (a) assess the feasibility, usability and acceptability of wearable devices in patients with active RA; (b) investigate the multivariate relationships within the dataset; and (c) explore the robustness of accelerometry outcomes to downsampling to facilitate future prolonged monitoring.

The influence of gaze cues on target prioritization (reaction times (RTs)) and movement execution (movement trajectories) differs based on the ability of the human gaze cue model to manually interact with the targets. Whereas gaze cues consistently impacted RTs, movement trajectories may only be affected when the hands of the human model had the potential to interact with the target. However, the perceived ability to interact with the targets was confounded by the proximity between the model's hands and the targets.
