Screening and monitoring of diabetes or dyslipidemia frequently involves a multi-step process requiring patients to obtain test requisitions from their primary care physician (PCP), followed by a laboratory visit and re-consultation. Point-of-care testing (POCT) for hemoglobin A (HbA) and lipid panel can streamline the patient care pathway. This study assessed the budget impact of introducing Afinion™ 2 POCT (Abbott Rapid Diagnostics) from the Canadian and Italian societal perspectives.

The recent study exploring the bidirectional associations between gallstone disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney stone disease highlights a critical concern in chronic disease management. Given the rising global prevalence of these conditions, understanding their interconnections is essential. The study emphasizes the importance of shared risk factors, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and oxidative stress, and calls for multidisciplinary screening strategies.

Background: The hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype was introduced as a means of identifying individuals at risk of developing metabolic syndrome as well as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. However, studies surrounding the prevalence of the phenotype and its relationship with established markers of cardiometabolic risk, especially in the Nigerian population, remain sparse. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the HTGW phenotype and explore its relationship with cardiovascular risk markers, namely Castelli Risk Indices I and II (CRI-I and CRI-II), Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP) and serum triglyceride-HDL cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL).

Atherosclerotic peripheral artery disease (PAD), that is, arteriosclerosis obliterans, is pathologically rooted in atherosclerosis, similar to other cardiovascular diseases. Aim: To investigate the effect of weight loss and metabolic improvement after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in older adults aged 65 years or over compared with younger adults in a retrospective analysis.
Methods: The J-SMART study database of 322 Japanese individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥32 kg/m who underwent LSG between 2011 and 2014 at 10 centers accredited by the Japanese Society for Treatment of Obesity were analyzed. The subjects were classified into two groups: ≥65 age group (range, 65-76 years; n = 25) and <65 age group (range, 22-64 years; n = 297).
