Background: Potato tubers from the STBd somatic hybrid line that exhibited improved tolerance to salinity and resistance to fungal and PVY infections were characterised. They were compared for their chemical composition to the Spunta variety produced by conventional agronomic practices. This study aimed to compare nutritional value and safety by feeding rats with STBd or commercial tubers added to the standard diet (20/80 w/w).
Results: The analysis of soluble sugar, fat, fibre and ash content of tubers did not reveal any significant differences between the hybrid line and the control Spunta variety. Small differences were observed in dry matter, starch and protein content of hybrid potatoes in comparison to controls. However, all values were within normal ranges reported in the literature. The feeding study on rats showed that overall health, weight gain, food consumption, morphological aspects and weights of organs were comparable between rat groups fed the STBd hybrid and the Spunta variety.
Conclusion: Taken together, 28 days of consumption of STBd hybrid potato did not exert any adverse effect on rats compared with commercial Spunta potato. The STBd potato line was therefore considered to be as safe for food utilisation as the commercial variety.

Pluripotent somatic stem cells are the drivers of unlimited growth of Echinococcus multilocularis metacestode tissue within the organs of the intermediate host. To understand the dynamics of parasite proliferation within the host, it is therefore important to delineate basic mechanisms of Echinococcus stem cell maintenance and differentiation. We herein undertake the first step towards characterizing the role of an evolutionarily old metazoan cell-cell communication system, delta/notch signalling, in Echinococcus cell fate decisions.

A method has been developed for manufacturing biological microchips on an aluminum substrate with hydrophilic cells from brush copolymers with the formation of a matrix of cells using photolithography. The surface of aluminum substrates was previously coated with a thin, durable, moderately hydrophobic layer of cross-linked polymer to prevent contact with the aluminum surface of the components used in the analysis of nucleic acids. Aluminum biochip substrates have high thermal conductivity and low heat capacity, which is important for the development of methods for multiplex PCR analysis on a chip.

This article explores the development of T cell-based therapies in Switzerland. These therapies, which elicit the immunological potential of each patient to respond to tumor development, constitute a major promise for so-called 'precision oncology'. We document how immunological concepts, technologies, and practices are articulated given the centrality of genomics in 'precision oncology'.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) encodes genes essential for oxidative phosphorylation. The m.3243A>G mutation causes severe disease, including myopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) and is the most common pathogenic mtDNA mutation in humans.

Sexual characteristics and reproductive systems are dynamic traits in many taxa, but the developmental modifications that allow change and innovation are largely unknown. A leading model for this process is the evolution of self-fertile hermaphrodites from male/female ancestors. However, these studies require direct analysis of sex-determination in male/female species, as well as in the hermaphroditic species that are related to them.
