Coronaviruses (CoVs) encode non-structural proteins (nsp's) 1-16, which assemble to form replication-transcription complexes that function in viral RNA synthesis. All CoVs encode a proofreading 3'-5' exoribonuclease in non-structural protein 14 (nsp14-ExoN) that mediates proofreading and high-fidelity replication and is critical for other roles in replication and pathogenesis. The enzymatic activity of nsp14-ExoN is enhanced in the presence of the cofactor nsp10.

Single-Stage Surgical Approach to Aortoesophageal Fistula After Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair.

Ann Thorac Surg Short Rep

September 2024

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China.

Background: The aortoesophageal fistula (AEF) caused by thoracic endovascular aortic repair is a challenging condition. Traditional treatment approaches have been associated with high mortality and morbidity. This study introduces a modified single-stage surgical strategy that aims to optimize outcomes and to reduce the risk of recurrence for AEF.

Foraging abilities and competitive interactions between two egg parasitoids of bagrada bug in California.

Bull Entomol Res

January 2025

Invasive Species and Pollinator Health Research Unit, USDA-ARS, Albany, CA, USA.

Bagrada bug, (Burmeister) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is an invasive pest of cole crops in the United States. Because it also feeds on widespread weeds and persists in natural habitats surrounding crop fields, conventional control strategies are often ineffective at providing long-term control. One egg parasitoid, Talamas (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), is a promising biological control candidate because of its ability to parasitise buried eggs.

Schemes of classical shadows have been developed to facilitate the readout of digital quantum devices, but similar tools for analog quantum simulators are scarce and experimentally impractical. In this Letter, we provide a measurement scheme for fermionic quantum devices that estimates second and fourth order correlation functions by means of free fermionic, translationally invariant evolutions-or quenches-and measurements in the mode occupation number basis. We precisely characterize what correlation functions can be recovered and equip the estimates with rigorous bounds on sample complexities, a particularly important feature in light of the difficulty of getting good statistics in reasonable experimental platforms, with measurements being slow.

Impact of land-use and fecal contamination on Escherichia populations in environmental samples.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Food System Integrity, AgResearch Limited, Hopkirk Research Institute, Massey University, Cnr University Avenue and Library Road, Private Bag 11008, Palmerston North, 4442, New Zealand.

Understanding the composition of complex Escherichia coli populations from the environment is necessary for identifying strategies to reduce the impacts of fecal contamination and protect public health. Metabarcoding targeting the hypervariable gene gnd was used to reveal the complex population diversity of E. coli and phenotypically indistinct Escherichia species in water, soil, sediment, aquatic biofilm, and fecal samples from native forest and pastoral sites.
