Objective: To examine the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration (Hb) at 27-29 weeks' gestation and severity of pre-eclampsia (PE).
Methods: This was a retrospective study of maternal Hb at 27-29 week in 497 pregnancies that developed PE and 497 healthy controls with normal pregnancy outcomes. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the association between HB and maternal characteristics and severity of PE classified according to gestation at delivery, birth weight and prevalence of abnormal peripartum maternal creatinine, aspartate transaminase and platelet count.
Results: There was no significant difference in median Hb between the PE and control groups. Multiple regression analysis in the PE group showed that significant prediction for Hb was provided by Afro-Caribbean race, gestation at delivery, maternal platelet count <2.5th percentile and birth weight, but not serum creatinine or aspartate transaminase above the 97.5th percentile. Increased Hb was observed in both small and large for gestational age neonates.
Conclusion: In PE, Hb at 27-29 weeks is influenced by birth weight, maternal characteristics and platelet count.

Despite the well-documented mutation spectra of β-thalassemia, the genetic variants and haplotypes of globin gene clusters modulating its clinical heterogeneity remain incompletely illustrated. Here, a targeted long-read sequencing (T-LRS) is demonstrated to capture 20 genes/loci in 1,020 β-thalassemia patients. This panel permits not only identification of thalassemia mutations at 100% of sensitivity and specificity, but also detection of rare structural variants (SVs) and single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in modifier genes/loci.

Methods: The study involved 25 lactating Sprague Dawley white rats aged 3 months old and weighing approximately 200 g divided into five treatment groups thus; T0 as the control, T1 with quail eggs enriched with commercial feed, T2 with quail eggs enriched with 3% of marine macroalgae, T3 with quail eggs enriched with 4% of marine macroalgae, and T4 with quail eggs enriched with 5% of marine macroalgae, which received one quail egg for 21 days.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the possible effects of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on fetal heart structure and the relationship of this effect with maternal blood sugar control.
Materials And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 19 women with GDM at 24-36 weeks of gestation (case group) and 21 healthy pregnant women at the same weeks of gestation (control group) were examined. Fetal heart structure was evaluated by ultrasonography; interventricular septum (IVS) thickness, right and left ventricular sphericity indices, global sphericity index (GSI) and cardio-thoracic ratio were also measured.
