Objective: To investigate the antibacterial properties of lucifensin in maggots of Lucilia sericata after septic injury.
Methods: In our preliminary study we have shown that injuring the maggots with a needle soaked in lipopolysaccharide solution induced within 24 h lucifensin expression in the fat body and in the grease coupler of the salivary glands. It is assumed that lucifensin is secreted solely from this tissue into the haemolymph (similar to other insect defensins) and not into secreted/excreted products. We used high-performance liquid chromatography fractionation and radial diffusion assay to investigate the antibacterial properties of haemolymph extracted from larvae after septic injury.
Results: After septic injury, production of lucifensin in the haemolymph is increased. This led to higher antibacterial activity of such haemolymph in comparison to non-stimulated larvae.
Coclusions: These results suggest that beside the previously demonstrated role of lucifensin in the debridement therapy, lucifensin is simultaneously important as a part of the systematic immune response.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major health threats of the modern world. Thus, new structural classes of antimicrobial compounds are needed in order to overcome existing resistance. Cystobactamids represent one such new compound class that inhibit the well-established target bacterial type II topoisomerases while exhibiting superior antibacterial and resistance-breaking properties.

Polymeric coatings that combine resistance to adhesion ("defending") and killing ("attacking") of biocontaminants were proposed to endow the surface with nonadhesive and bactericidal capabilities. In contrast, a zwitterionic copolymer P(GMA--DMAPS) with antifouling groups ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide, DMAPS) and a zwitterionic/cationic copolymer P(GMA--DMAPS--DMC) with bactericidal groups ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride, DMC) were synthesized, of which the latter exhibited synergistic inhibitory and killing properties. The distinct feed ratios of monomers were conducted, and the optimal molar ratio was obtained.

Background: Recently, products with antibacterial properties derived from medicinal plants have increased as an alternative to conventional drugs. Thus, this study aimed to formulate and evaluate the antibacterial activity of an experimental gel based on Grindelia tarapacana essential oil in a bacterial consortium.
Material And Methods: The composition of the essential oil (EO) was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

This study aims to enhance the antimicrobial properties of chitosan through preparing novel chitosan Schiff bases via coupling with 4-formylphenyl 2,3-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline-6-sulfonate (B5) where, different molar ratios of B5 were used to prepare various Schiff bases with chitosan, resulting in Schiff bases coded as d5, d6, d7, and d8, respectively. The modified chitosan samples (d5, d6, d7, and d8) showed reduced crystallinity and improved thermal stability. The crystallinity index of unmodified chitosan was 64 %, which decreased to 59, 55.

This study introduces a novel bilayer wound dressing that integrates a quaternized chitosan-polyacrylic acid (QCs-PAA) sponge as the top layer with electrospun nanofibers containing curcumin as the bottom layer. For the first time, QCs and PAA were combined in an 80:20 ratio through freeze-drying to form a porous sponge layer with ideal structural properties, including 83 ± 6 % porosity and pore diameters of 290 ± 12.5 μm.
