The main photophysical properties of a series of recently synthetized 1,2- and 1,3-squaraines, including absorption electronic spectra, singlet-triplet energy gaps, and spin-orbit matrix elements, have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT approaches. A benchmark of three exchange-correlation functionals has been performed in six different solvent environments. The investigated 1,2 squaraines have been found to possess two excited triplet states (T1 and T2) that lie below the energy of the excited singlet one (S1). The radiationless intersystem spin crossing efficiency is thus enhanced in both the studied systems and both the transitions could contribute to the excited singlet oxygen production. Moreover, they have a singlet-triplet energy gap higher than that required to generate the cytotoxic singlet oxygen species. According to our data, these compounds could be used in photodynamic therapy applications that do not require high tissue penetration.

Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra contain key information about molecular chirality by discriminating the absolute configurations of chiral molecules, which is crucial in asymmetric organic synthesis and the drug industry. However, existing predictive approaches lack the consideration of ECD spectra owing to the data scarcity and the limited interpretability to achieve trustworthy prediction. Here we establish a large-scale dataset for chiral molecular ECD spectra and propose ECDFormer for accurate and interpretable ECD spectrum prediction.

Gender identification of chick embryos at the early stages of incubation is of significant importance to poultry industry. Existing studies showed reproductive hormone concentrations are associated with gender of chick embryos. Accurate detection of reproductive hormone concentration can assist in gender identification.

Wanxi white goose is an important male parent in crossbreeding of Chinese geese, but its short reproductive cycle restricts its application in Northeast China. Therefore, understanding the potential mechanism of breeding period regulation in Wanxi white goose will help to provide more options for crossbreeding. In this study, the reproductive period was divided into prophase (T1), metaphase (T2) and anaphase (T3) according to the laying rhythm of geese.

Microplastics (MPs) in nature inevitably undergo various aging processes and may exhibit varied interfacial interactions with the coexisted contaminants. Here several discarded disposable polyethylene and polypropylene plastic packaging materials were collected and employed as the raw materials of MPs, and the effects of stimulated UV irradiation and microbial colonization on the variations of surface physicochemical characteristics, including biofilm content, oxygen-containing functional groups, oxygen/carbon ratio, hydrophilicity and surface charge properties were explored. Simultaneously, the adsorption behavior of each MPs on the representative cationic dye crystal violet (CV), as well as the influences of salinity and pH of CV solution, was investigated.

We investigate the electronic properties of nanoribbons made out of monolayer Lieb, transition, and kagome lattices using the tight-binding model with a generic Hamiltonian. It allows us to map the evolutionary stages of the interconvertibility process between Lieb and kagome nanoribbons by means of only one control parameter. Results for the energy spectra, the density of states, and spatial probability density distributions are discussed for nanoribbons with three types of edges: straight, bearded, and asymmetric.
