We report the first measurement of the net-charge fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[sNN]=2.76 TeV, measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The dynamical fluctuations per unit entropy are observed to decrease when going from peripheral to central collisions. An additional reduction in the amount of fluctuations is seen in comparison to the results from lower energies. We examine the dependence of fluctuations on the pseudorapidity interval, which may account for the dilution of fluctuations during the evolution of the system. We find that the fluctuations at the LHC are smaller compared to the measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and as such, closer to what has been theoretically predicted for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma.

In electrochemical experiments, the number of electrons of the electrode immersed in the electrolyte is usually variable. Additionally, the numbers of adsorbed substances on the surface of the electrode, the solvent molecules, and counter charge ions in the near-surface region can also vary. Treating electrochemical solid-liquid interfaces with the typical fixed electron number density functional theory (DFT) approach tends to be a challenge.

Molecular mechanisms underlying the thermal response of cells remain elusive. On the basis of the recent result that the short-time diffusive dynamics of the proteome is an excellent indicator of temperature-dependent bacterial metabolism and death, we used neutron scattering (NS) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the sub-nanosecond proteome mobility in psychro-, meso-, and hyperthermophilic bacteria over a wide temperature range. The magnitude of thermal fluctuations, measured by atomic mean square displacements, is similar among all studied bacteria at their respective thermal cell death.

We report simulation studies of 33 single intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) using coarse-grained bead-spring models where interactions among different amino acids are introduced through a hydropathy matrix and additional screened Coulomb interaction for the charged amino acid beads. Our simulation studies of two different hydropathy scales (HPS1, HPS2) [Dignon et al., PLoS Comput.

Short-range interactions and long-range contacts drive the 3D folding of structured proteins. The proteins' structure has a direct impact on their biological function. However, nearly 40% of the eukaryotes proteome is composed of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and protein regions that fluctuate between ensembles of numerous conformations.

Insulin and glucagon secreted from the pancreas with dynamic balance play a vital role in regulating blood glucose levels. Although distinct glucose-responsive insulin delivery systems have been developed, the lack of a self-regulated glucagon release module limits their clinical applications due to the potential risk of hypoglycemia. Here, we describe a transdermal polymeric microneedle patch for glucose-responsive closed-loop insulin and glucagon delivery to achieve glycemic regulation with minimized risk of hypoglycemia.
