Using confocal microscopy, we measure the packing geometry and interdroplet forces as a function of the osmotic pressure in a 3D emulsion system. We assume a harmonic interaction potential over a wide range of volume fractions and attribute the observed nonlinear elastic response of the pressure with density to the first corrections to the scaling laws of the microstructure away from the critical point. The bulk modulus depends on the excess contacts created under compression, which leads to the correction exponent α=1.5. Microscopically, the nonlinearities manifest themselves as a narrowing of the distribution of the pressure per particle as a function of the global pressure.

Disposable filtering face piece respirators (FFRs) are not approved for reuse as standard of care. However, lessons learnt from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, FFRs decontamination and reuse may be needed as crisis capacity strategy to ensure availability in medical facilities. We studied a decontamination methodology based on atmospheric pressure plasma technology, which allows for rapid, contact-free decontamination without utilisation of harmful chemicals, and suitable to access small pores and microscopic filters openings.

This work involves the preparation of dual surrogate-imprinted polymers (D-MIPs) for the capture of SARS-CoV-2. To achieve this goal, an innovative and novel dual imprinting approach using carboxylated-polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoparticles with a diameter of 100 nm and a SARS-CoV-2 Spike-derived peptide was carried out at the surface of amine-functionalized silica (PS-NH) microspheres with a diameter of 500 nm. Firstly, PS-COOH nanoparticles with the same size and spherical shape as the SARS-CoV-2 virus were employed to form hemispherical indentations (HI) at the surface of the PS-NH microspheres (obtaining dummy particle-imprinted polymers, HI-MIPs).

Concentrated solar-driven CO2 reduction is a breakthrough approach to combat climate crisis. Harnessing the in-situ coupling of high photon flux density and high thermal energy flow initiates multiple energy conversion pathways, such as photothermal, photoelectric, and thermoelectric processes, thereby enhancing the efficient activation of CO2. This review systematically presents the fundamental principles of concentrated solar systems, the design and classification of solar-concentrating devices, and industrial application case studies.

The dairy industry faces challenges in controlling spoilage microorganisms, particularly , known to form resilient biofilms. Conventional disinfection methods have limitations, prompting the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives like ozone. This study focused on biofilms on polystyrene and polyethylene surfaces, evaluating ozone efficacy when incorporated into different water sources and applied under static and dynamic conditions.

The pulmonary vasculature plays a pivotal role in the development and progress of chronic lung diseases. Due to limitations of conventional two-dimensional histological methods, the complexity and the detailed anatomy of the lung blood circulation might be overlooked. In this study, we demonstrate the practical use of optical serial block face imaging (SBFI), ex vivo microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), and nondestructive optical tomography for visualization and quantification of the pulmonary circulation's 3D architecture from macro- to micro-structural levels in murine lung samples.
