A triple-junction RGB optical sensor with vertically stacked photodiodes and signal processing that provides precise values of the currents generated by blue, green, and red light is presented. The signal processing is based on the determination of the border depths of the space-charge regions of all three photodiodes. A current-mode implementation using current conveyors and variable-gain current amplifiers is introduced. The responsivities of all three photodiodes calculated using the proposed approach are in very good agreement with the measured results.

Neural correlates of perceptual plasticity in the auditory midbrain and thalamus.

J Neurosci

January 2025

Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, 20742.

Hearing is an active process in which listeners must detect and identify sounds, segregate and discriminate stimulus features, and extract their behavioral relevance. Adaptive changes in sound detection can emerge rapidly, during sudden shifts in acoustic or environmental context, or more slowly as a result of practice. Although we know that context- and learning-dependent changes in the sensitivity of auditory cortical (ACX) neurons support many aspects of perceptual plasticity, the contribution of subcortical auditory regions to this process is less understood.

Novel transfer learning based bone fracture detection using radiographic images.

BMC Med Imaging

A bone fracture is a medical condition characterized by a partial or complete break in the continuity of the bone. Fractures are primarily caused by injuries and accidents, affecting millions of people worldwide. The healing process for a fracture can take anywhere from one month to one year, leading to significant economic and psychological challenges for patients.

Accurate and continuous blood glucose monitoring is essential for effective diabetes management, yet traditional finger pricking methods are often inconvenient and painful. To address this issue, photoplethysmography (PPG) presents a promising non-invasive alternative for estimating blood glucose levels. In this study, we propose an innovative 1-second signal segmentation method and evaluate the performance of three advanced deep learning models using a novel dataset to estimate blood glucose levels from PPG signals.

HLA-E: Immune Receptor Functional Mechanisms Revealed by Structural Studies.

Immunol Rev

January 2025

Nuffield Department of Medicine, Center for Immuno-Oncology, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

HLA-E is a nonclassical, nonpolymorphic, class Ib HLA molecule. Its primary function is to present a conserved nonamer peptide, termed VL9, derived from the signal sequence of classical MHC molecules to the NKG2x-CD94 receptors on NK cells and a subset of T lymphocytes. These receptors regulate the function of NK cells, and the importance of this role, which is conserved across mammalian species, probably accounts for the lack of genetic polymorphism.

The TRAMP complex contains two enzymatic activities essential for RNA processing upstream of the nuclear exosome. Within TRAMP, RNA is 3' polyadenylated by a subcomplex of Trf4/5 and Air1/2 and unwound 3' to 5' by Mtr4, a DExH helicase. The molecular mechanisms of TRAMP assembly and RNA shuffling between the two TRAMP catalytic sites are poorly understood.
