Two advances in the synthesis of hairpin pyrrole-imidazole polyamides (PAs) are described. First, the application of a convergent synthetic strategy is shown, involving the Boc-based solid phase synthesis of a C-terminal fragment and the solution phase synthesis of the N-terminal fragment. Second a new hybrid resin is developed that allows for the preparation of hairpin PAs lacking a C-terminal β-alanine tail. Both methods are compatible with a range of coupling reagents and provide a facile, modular route to prepare PA libraries in high yield and crude purity.

Background: Juvenile hormone (JH) is a key endocrine governing insect development, metamorphosis and reproduction. JH analogs have offered great potential for insect pest control. In adulthood, JH titer rapidly increases in the previtellogenic period and reaches a peak in the vitellogenic phase.

Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidising microorganisms are present in volcanic deposits throughout succession, with levels of vegetation and soil influencing the communities present. Carboxydovores are a subset of CO oxidisers that use CO as an energy source, which raises questions about the physiological and metabolic features that make them more competitive in harsh volcanic ecosystems. To address these questions, samples were taken from volcanic strata formed by eruptions from Calbuco Volcano (Chile) in 2015 (tephra) and 1917 (soil).

In bioneuronal systems, the synergistic interaction between mechanosensitive piezo channels and neuronal synapses can convert and transmit pressure signals into complex temporal plastic pulses with excitatory and inhibitory features. However, existing artificial tactile neuromorphic systems struggle to replicate the elaborate temporal plasticity observed between excitatory and inhibitory features in biological systems, which is critical for the biomimetic processing and memorizing of tactile information. Here we demonstrate a mechano-gated iontronic piezomemristor with programmable temporal-tactile plasticity.

Recalcitrant bacterial infections can be caused by various types of dormant bacteria, including persisters and viable but nonculturable (VBNC) cells. Despite their clinical importance, we know fairly little about bacterial dormancy development and recovery. Previously, we established a correlation between protein aggregation and dormancy in Escherichia coli.

Background: Central obesity increases the risk of developing poor outcomes of COVID-19. The pro-inflammatory state and antibody dysfunction are thought to contribute to poor outcomes; however, the evidence is unclear.
Methods: This is a cohort study among COVID-19 patients with central obesity in Dr.
