Background: Pesticide exposure may contribute to cognitive decline, but empirical evidence is limited. We examined high pesticide exposure events (HPEE) in relation to subjective cognitive decline among farmers in the Pesticide and Sense of Smell Study (PASS), a sub-cohort of the Agricultural Health Study (AHS).
Method: This analysis included 2365 predominantly white male farmers from Iowa and North Carolina (aged 70±10 years) who enrolled in AHS from 1993-1997 and participated in PASS in 2020-2021.
Alzheimers Dement
December 2024
Aging Research Center, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
Background: Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke have been linked to increased dementia risk. We examined whether high levels of cognitive reserve (CR) are associated with an attenuation in the CMD-dementia association and lower levels of CMD-related brain pathologies.
Method: Within the UK Biobank, 216,178 dementia-free participants aged ≥60 were followed for up to 15 years for incident dementia via linage to medical records.

Minnesota Department of Health, Zoonotic Diseases Unit, St. Paul, MN, USA.
Objectives: Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) poses an occupational risk for poultry workers, responders, and others in contact with infected birds. The objective of this analysis was to describe HPAI surveillance methods and outcomes, and highlight the challenges, successes, and lessons learned during the Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH's) public health response to HPAI outbreaks in Minnesota poultry flocks in the years 2015 and 2022-2023.
Methods: During both outbreaks, MDH staff attempted to contact all potentially exposed people and conduct a standardized interview.
Alzheimers Dement
December 2024
University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Background: Increasing evidence points to the possible risk roles of psychosocial factors (lack of education, active social participation, physical exercise and mentally stimulating activity, economic instability, traumatic life events) in the pathogenic process and clinical manifestation of dementia disorders. In recent years in our country, in the context of a complex inflationary process, there has been an increase in all indicators of vulnerability and poverty, exceeding 40% of the population below the poverty line in 2023 and around 9% below the indigence line.
Method: In the context of International Alzheimer's Day, the Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Week was held at the Hospital de Clínicas of Buenos Aires.
Alzheimers Dement
December 2024
Dementias Laboratory, National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Mexico City, DF, Mexico.
Background: Dementia is a syndrome highly prevalent in elderly. Genetic and health factors have been reported to be associated with their onset. There is evidence that some psychosocial factors may have a differential effect by sex, beyond biological or hormonal explanations, as loneliness and social isolation(SI).
